The border crisis has become so pronounced that politicians on both the left and the right have castigated the Biden administration for its failure to address the matter. As the influx of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers continues, various reports have surfaced highlighting the ongoing feud between Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and President Joe Biden over the immigration issue.

Earlier this week, a report noted that the White House is considering having illegal immigrant families remain in Texas while they wait for their asylum screenings. The idea would be to track these individuals by employing GPS monitoring devices in ankle bracelets.

The Biden administration is considering forcing some migrant families who enter the country without authorization to remain near the border in Texas while awaiting asylum screening, effectively limiting their ability to travel within the U.S., three U.S. officials told The Times.

Administration officials have been considering the idea as a way to stem recent increases in the numbers of migrant families crossing the southern border, which reportedly reached an all-time high last month. Supporters of the remain-in-Texas idea, which has yet to be finalized, hope that it would help the administration advance its goals of quickly deporting families who fail initial asylum screenings and deterring other families from crossing in the first place.

By instituting this system, it would ostensibly be easier to keep track of those seeking to gain entry into the country. If a family or individual failed their screening, it would be easier to deport them because they would already be close to the southern border.

Migrant families are generally harder to arrest in the interior of the U.S. because of the complicated logistical planning needed to apprehend children and their parents. Migrant family deportations are historically lower than those of single adults seeking asylum in the U.S.

This idea didn’t go over well with Gov. Abbott, who has been shipping busloads of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers to blue cities whose leadership has designated them as sanctuaries. He responded by declaring that Texas would up the ante on the busloads sent to blue states and cities if the administration took such an action.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott late Thursday promised he would send "even more buses" of migrants to cities, including Washington, D.C., if the Biden administration moved forward with a reported plan to keep migrants in Texas -- just as the administration is facing pressure from left-wing officials in cities like New York City over migrant traffic.

"Biden considers forcing migrant families to remain in Texas. This scam was tried years ago & was shot down by a judge," Abbott said on X, formerly known as Twitter. "We will send Biden the same swift justice."

"And, we will add even more buses of migrants to Washington D.C.," he said.

Of course, there is more to this story than simple policy debates. Texas has been one of the states that has been most impacted by the border crisis, and it has taken on many of those seeking to be allowed into the U.S. Abbott has been one of the leading voices taking the White House to task for not addressing the issue competently. He has been joined by New York City Mayor Eric Adams, whose city has taken on tens of thousands of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers sent from Texas and elsewhere. He cautioned against the consequences of allowing the crisis to continue, noting that his city could be “destroyed” by it.

This ongoing problem underscores a broader question: How should America handle the immigration issue? Voices on both sides of the political divide have repeatedly called for reforming immigration policies for years, but Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the White House have consistently failed to hammer out a viable effort to overhaul a deeply flawed system. It appears that, unlike their constituents, our lawmakers and leaders would rather use the issue as a political football than to provide solutions.
