Republican candidate Monica De La Cruz has defeated her opponent, Democrat Michelle Vallejo for Texas’ 15th congressional district. While Vallejo has not yet conceded victory, De La Cruz is the projected winner of the race and will become the district’s newest representative.

“Praise God we have won tonight,” the Republican said, on stage at an election party in McAllen.

Similar to Mayra Flores‘ race, this district was redistricted in a way that gave De La Cruz a slight advantage.

“New district lines drawn after the 2020 Census included more Republican-leaning areas in the northern part of the district, which stretches from the eastern exurbs of San Antonio down to McAllen’s border with Mexico. The district voted for President Joe Biden with a 1.9 percentage point margin in 2020 but would have voted for former President Donald Trump with a 2.8 percentage point margin under the new district barriers,” according to the Texas Tribune.

De La Cruz was one of three Republican Latina candidates who were being looked at as signs that Hispanics are veering away from the Democratic Party. But at this point, it appears she is the only member of the trio that will go to Washington, as the others lost to their Democratic opponents.
