If you’re anything like me, you can’t ever get enough of watching the Democrats beclown themselves over and over again. But this past example of political buffoonery almost made me embarrassed for Democratic lawmakers who thought they had scored points with the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.
Keyword: “Almost.”
During a Monday night hearing, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), whose sole mission in life seems to be constantly showing the nation how much she hates former President Donald Trump, read aloud the content of text messages sent from various Fox News’ hosts to Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows. In these messages, the news personalities asked Meadows to urge the former president to get in front of a camera and condemn the riots and tell those involved to go home.
The left and their anti-Trump Republican allies touted the hearing as a “gotcha” moment they could use to further smear the right. But in reality, all they did was shoot themselves in the foot. RedState’s Brad Slager noted:
In other words, they were all calling for an end to the violence as it transpired, the very opposite of colluding with the attackers and plotting a coup. If the press wanted to have its smoking gun, in text format, they would be looking at comments like, “Congratulations Mark, the plan is working!”, not, as Laura Ingraham said, “Mark, the president needs to tell people in the Capitol to go home. This is hurting all of us. He is destroying his legacy.”
What Democrats didn’t realize is that this drove the dagger even deeper into the heart of the left’s narrative about a coordinated effort to take over the country. However, given that these folks are about as self-aware as Don Quixote, they had no idea how to read the room. CNN media activist Brian Stelter tried to make hay of the fact that the Fox News hosts who texted Meadows hadn’t responded to the revelation of the messages until 24 hours after they were reported.
"It took Fox News more than 24 hours to muster up a real response" to the 1/6 texts. @oliverdarcy has details here: https://t.co/qLGOdM8CKz

But as RedState’s Nick Arama pointed out:
First, there was nothing to respond to, since there was nothing wrong in any of the texts — they were telling Meadows to do what he could to see if they could stop the rioting. So? What exactly is wrong with such texts? What do they need to respond to? Just more of CNN making something out of nothing — which is what CNN does for a living.
Of course, the hosts did end up responding and mocked the left-wing activist media’s attempts to exploit the story. Fox News’ Tucker Carlson noted the obvious: That the text messages demonstrate that these media figures were in no way involved in the assault nor did they condone the actions of the thugs who participated in the violence.

The Democrats have been milking the Jan. 6 riots to weaponize against conservatives since approximately 15 seconds after they ended. They used it as a pretext to impeach President Trump after he was out of office. Democrats have been using it to smear various Republican lawmakers. At times they even accused lawmakers like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) of being involved in the nonexistent plot to take over the country.
Unfortunately for the Democrats, this particular cow has run out of milk. But they don’t yet seem to realize it. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) even tried to doctor a text message from Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) to former chief of staff Mark Meadows to make it appear as if he were telling Meadows to implore former Vice President Mike Pence to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
The reality is that the Democrats are holding on to the riots for dear life as they believe it is the only thing that might possibly keep them from getting thrown out of Congress in next year’s midterm elections. They know that as of now, they don’t have much to run on and the geriatric authoritarian in the White House has become an albatross around their necks due to his terrible performance.
Unfortunately, this plan of attack is not going to be as effective as the left might hope. At this point, the American public is more concerned with kitchen table issues than with Jan. 6. The Democrats’ lack of victories means they will have nothing to stand on when they are trying to appeal to their constituents.
The dishonest exploitation of the riots is annoying to those who don’t appreciate being manipulated by cynical leftists whose policies are utter failures. But you know what Napoleon Bonaparte said: “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”
