Biden Can’t Win for Losing on Immigration

A group of open borders activists took their ball and went home during a meeting with top White House officials on Saturday because they were not satisfied with President Joe Biden’s failure to be the type of open borders president for which they wished when they supported him in 2020. This development comes as the Biden administration is taking criticism from both the left and the right over its mishandling of the crisis at the southern border.

Politico reported:

Dozens of immigration advocates walked out, virtually, on top Biden officials Saturday in protest of the administration’s decision to continue border policies enacted during the Trump administration, according to several people who were in the meeting.

The report continued, explaining that the activists “asked for time before the beginning of a video meeting Saturday morning with several Biden administration officials.”

The open-borders advocates read a statement contending that the Biden administration was “playing politics with human lives” and announced they could no longer “come into these conversations in good conscience.”

Ariana Saludares, an activist working with Colores United, told Politico that she “cannot stand one more meeting of them pretending” and that the administration gives them “accolades on the outside, but on the inside, we’re having to take out the metaphoric knives from our back.”

The point of contention is the Biden administration re-establishment the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), also known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy which began under former President Donald Trump. The policy required migrants seeking asylum claims to wait in Mexico while their cases are adjudicated.

The program was one of several that Biden reversed shortly after taking office, which sent a message that migrants who traveled to the U.S. would be allowed to enter the country. A federal court struck down the president’s attempt to halt the policy after being sued by Texas and Missouri, which is why the White House is being forced to reimplement the program.

Buzzfeed News reported:

Under the Trump administration, more than 71,000 immigrants and asylum-seekers were forced to wait in Mexico while US judges adjudicated their cases under MPP, also known as Remain in Mexico.

Before leaving the Zoom meeting, the advocates complained that “there is no improved version of MPP. It is not possible to make the inhumane, humane, the unfair, fair, or to breathe life into a deadly program.”

Taylor Levy, an immigration attorney, who was at the meeting, told Buzzfeed:

The administration has blood on their hands if they go forward with implementing MPP and already has blood on their hands for their horrific adherence to Title 42.

Levy continued, insisted that the White House is being “disingenuous by claiming that their hands are tied.”

However, a White House official told Politico:

[T]he Biden Administration has been very clear that MPP is not an immigration policy we agree with or support. That’s why the Department of Homeland Security immediately appealed the court injunction once it was ordered.

The official also indicated that the administration will challenge the ruling so they can finally get rid of MPP.

Make no mistake. President Joe Biden is most assuredly an open borders president. But he’s not quite as open borders as those on the far-left who will only be happy when the United States begins accepting any and every immigrant who wishes to cross the border regardless of their background.

This particular problem – which he created – has placed the president in a position in which he can’t seem to please anybody. Indeed even those who agree with his approach to immigration are not satisfied with his performance thus far.

The situation continues to deteriorate. People are dying while trying to make the dangerous journey to the southern border. Border towns are suffering. Border Patrol is being stretched thin, which has been a huge opportunity for drug cartels and human traffickers.

Unfortunately, there appears to be no end in sight. The fact that Biden’s team is divided on how the administration should handle the border crisis is only exacerbating the problem. This is a situation that will not likely be resolved as long as Biden is in office – indeed, it seems that this might just be going as intended.
