It appears that former Vice President Joe Biden might already be putting his cabinet together before the election. According to an Axios report, he may already know who he wants to place in the attorney general position. 

On Sunday, Axios reported that Biden’s team is looking at New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the role of attorney general. Aides at the National Governors Association, which Cuomo chairs, are reportedly searching for replacements to take over in the event that he leaves his position. This has prompted speculation that Cuomo might take over the cabinet position if Biden defeats Trump in November. 

Democratic donors told Axios that the New York governor is being pushed for attorney general. Biden is considering him for the job since the two have a longstanding friendship. 

If Biden wins the election, his pick for the top law enforcement officer would likely be responsible for targeting Trump and officials who served in his administration. Political pressure might compel them to try to find anything they possibly can to prosecute him. 

Moreover, the new attorney general would have to address nationwide unrest over police brutality as well as other problems. Of course, there is another wrinkle to this potential occurrence. U.S. Attorney John Durham’s investigation into the origins of the Russia investigation, which is not yet concluded, might be scuttled as soon as the new administration takes office. 

Neither Biden’s campaign nor Cuomo has spoken publicly about the possibility. However, the governor stated that he would not accept a cabinet position in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” earlier this year. 

“I was in a Cabinet, I was in Bill Clinton’s Cabinet, been there, done that,” he said. “I don’t want to go to Washington. They couldn’t drag me, they couldn’t force me. I only represent the people of the state, I have no agenda besides theirs.” Under Clinton, Cuomo served as the Housing and Urban Development secretary. 

Cuomo became a high-profile actor on the political stage amid the COVID-19 pandemic due to his handling of the virus in New York. Left-leaning media outlets frequently lauded his performance. However, his popularity took a hit after he mandated that coronavirus patients be placed in nursing homes rather than hospitals. Some have indicated that this decision likely resulted in almost 6,000 deaths. 

It is not yet certain who will win the presidential election in November. But this story shows what might happen if Trump loses, and it is a glaring example of what the political landscape might look like under a Biden victory.
