There is a reason why I say the corporate press is the enemy of the people.
You have probably already heard about the story of former MSNBC producer Ariana Pekary, who recently wrote a harsh blog post about the corporate media after leaving her former employer. Only a few weeks after centrist Bari Weiss left The New York Times due to news outlet’s hostility to differing viewpoints, Pekary left for similar reasons.
In her post, the former producer explained her reasons for leaving MSNBC. “The problem is the job itself. It forces skilled journalists to make bad decisions on a daily basis,” she wrote. She also lamented the fact that amid the COVID-19 outbreak, news outlets were more concerned with pushing political agendas than informing the American public about the coronavirus. “As new details have become available about antibodies, a vaccine, or how COVID actually spreads, producers still want to focus on the politics. Important facts or studies get buried,” she argued.
Some have mistakenly assumed that Pekary’s post was only about MSNBC, but the reality is that she was talking about media on both sides of the political spectrum, not just on the left. She clarified this in a subsequent blog post. In this video, I break down how the media has become what Pekary calls a “cancer” that is destroying American society and put forth potential solutions to the problem.
The reality is that American journalism has become a danger to American society because their reporting is intended to push ratings by fomenting outrage and pushing agendas. “My concern, clearly stated in the post, is with the entire industry because each outlet uses the same funding model,” Pekary wrote.
As long as mainstream media outlets are unwilling to find other means than outrage to captivate their audiences, this deleterious trend will not change. But perhaps independent journalism and alternative media outlets can provide the public with the nuanced discourse that is lacking in the Fourth Estate.
