You’d be hard pressed to find many people to defend CNBC and their handling of the GOP debate on Wednesday night, save for some media hacks looking to circle the wagons around their fellow media hacks, particularly John Hardwood and Becky Quick. Still, the train wreck format allowed the candidates some unscripted moments the live audience appreciated as did the viewing audience.

One such moment came when [mc_name name=’Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’R000595′ ] jabbed not only the mainstream media, but Hillary Clinton as well for her duplicity in front of the Benghazi Select Committee. Following a diatribe about SuperPacs by Donald Trump in response to a question about H1B visas, Rubio cut in to make a comment:

I know the Democrats have the ultimate SuperPac. It’s called the mainstream media who every single day…and I’ll tell you why. Last week, Hillary Clinton went before a committee. She admitted she had sent e-mails to her family saying, “Hey, this attack at Benghazi was caused by Al Qaida-like elements.” She spent over a week telling the families of those victims and the American people that it was because of a video. And yet the mainstream media is going around saying it was the greatest week in Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
It was the week she got exposed as a liar. It was the week that she got exposed as a liar…

Tough words. But fair and completely accurate.

Hillary’s SuperPac would not allow that, so while appearing on CBS This Morning to to talk about his debate performance, Rubio spent most of the time going back and forth with Charlie Rose who was doing his best palace guard imitation for Hillary Clinton. Watch the exchange below:

It shows really just how unflappable Rubio has become. He didn’t hesitate, waver or second guess himself. Each time Rose tried to trip him up, Rubio was ready for it.

It should serve as a warning for all GOP candidates.

No matter who the nominee is, this will be standard fare for them in a general election cycle with Hillary Clinton. The media pretends to be calm, cool and completely fair, but in reality they are like Smeagol playing nice right up until that moment when Republicans threaten “the precious” (a metaphor really for any Democrat) at which point the media becomes Gollum, flying into a spittle-flecked rage to protect it.
