Mitt Romney Supports Gay Marriage. Except He Doesn't. But His Team Will Profit From It.

The Politico has a story on Organizing for America’s use of Barack Obama’s campaign email list. They are using the emails very effectively with Barack Obama remaining the key voice in the emails.Contrast that with Team Romney post election.

Mitt Romney’s campaign is handling its list differently. Romney’s digital firm, Targeted Victory, is simply selling the email list to any organization willing to pay.“They’re actually letting people rent and sell the Romney donor list,” Harris said. “But the emails are not actually coming from Mitt Romney. They’re nowhere near as valuable.”

Yes, that Targeted Victory — designer of Project Orca, the killer whale that got bloated and died on the beach of election day.A couple of weeks ago a friend forwarded me an email from the American Unity Fund. The email, authored by AUF President Margaret Hoover in support of gay marriage, read, in part:

The Supreme Court has issued historic rulings to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and dismiss California’s Proposition 8. I’m thrilled by the Court’s decision and the new opportunities to encourage Republicans to move forward on this issue by expanding rights for all Americans, including gay and lesbian Americans. If we as conservatives want to be consistent in our beliefs, we should welcome this removal of intrusive government from the private lives and decisions of individuals. We should also recognize that society is strengthened when we allow more Americans to share in the lifetime commitment of love and support that marriage represents. While the Court’s decision is a huge step forward, our work isn’t over yet. We need to take our fight into the states to end the exclusion of marriage and continue to engage Republicans on this important civil rights issue of our day. American Unity Fund is leading that effort, but they can’t do it alone. Please join me and contribute at least $100 to help us advance the cause of freedom for gay and lesbian Americans.

What does this have to do with Mitt Romney? At the bottom of the email was this fine print:

This email was sent by: Romney for President Inc., 138 Conant St., 1st Floor, Beverly, MA 01915.This message reflects the opinions and representations of the American Unity Fund alone, and is not an endorsement by Mitt Romney. You are receiving this email because you signed up as a member of Mitt Romney’s online community.

The Republicans will never learn how to use technology effectively as long as it continues to play by the same old rules that are no longer effective in the digital age.
