The Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas marked the first time sexual harassment allegations were weaponized for political purposes and ironically, it was then-Sen. Joe Biden who presided over the spectacle.

In the recently released documentary “Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words,” Justice Thomas says, “It’s a tactic and when people see it being a success, they don’t realize that they’re going to be the next ones in “The Tower of London.” It’s just a matter of time. You allow this to be a precedent in your society…And people might say, ‘Oh, it’s wonderful, this particular guy’s getting tarred and feathered.’ Well, there’s a lot of tar and a lot of feathers, and eventually you will be there.”

The mainstream media was silent for weeks after former Biden staffer Tara Reade went public with her allegations against the former Vice President. After several people came forward to corroborate her story and a video of Reade’s late mother calling into “Larry King Live” surfaced, the media realized the story wasn’t going away. They either denied it or accused Reade of lying.

But over the last week or so, many on the left have pivoted to something altogether unexpected, particularly in light of their performance during the Senate confirmation hearings of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Fox News’ media analyst Howard Kurtz identifies this approach as “so what if Biden did it.”

This new strategy may have been handed down by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as Democratic talking points frequently are. On Tuesday, Pelosi told MSNBC’s Ari Melber this is a closed issue for her and she won’t be taking any more questions about it. What?

Kurtz points to a New York Times op-ed penned by feminist author Linda Hirshman. The following excerpts convey the gist of her thinking.

I believe Tara Reade. So what’s a girl to do now?…

I’ll take one for the team. I believe Ms. Reade, and I’ll vote for Mr. Biden this fall.

I hate, hate, hate to say the following. Suck it up and make the utilitarian bargain.

Biden is likely to do more good for women and the nation than his competition, the worst president in the history of the Republic.

Wouldn’t a Biden presidency count for more than the harm done to the victims of abuse?

Then, former New York Times reporter and co-founder of The Hill Martin Tolchin wrote a letter to the editor (of The NY Times):

I don’t want an investigation. I want a coronation of Joe Biden. Would he make a great president? Unlikely. Would he make a good president? Good enough. Would he make a better president than the present occupant? Absolutely.

I don’t want justice, whatever that may be. I want a win, the removal of Donald Trump from office.

In other words, ‘I don’t care if Biden did it or not. We know he wouldn’t make a great president, but as long as Trump is removed from office, it’s okay.’

To be sure, not all liberals claim it doesn’t matter whether the allegations are true or not, but more than a few have adopted this position and it must be recognized.

Given the vitriol Democrats have directed toward the Republicans they’ve locked up in “The Tower of London,” starting with Justice Thomas, their stunning hypocrisy needs to be called out.

Will “so what if Biden did it” work?

It might.
