Maritime.net reports that an Arctic tour ship carrying a Climate Change documentary film team and several tourists, ran into some ice last week. They had been shooting a documentary about climate change and melting Arctic ice. Yes, really.

The MS MALMO, a Swedish-flagged ship, was cruising off Longyearbyen, Svalbard Archipelago, halfway between Norway and the North Pole when it got stuck in ice. The vessel’s sixteen passengers had to be airlifted to safety under “challenging” conditions. According to Maritime.net, seven crew members remained aboard the ship as they awaited assistance from the Coast Guard.

This is not the first time a ship carrying climate change activists has run into trouble in polar ice floes. In the CNN video below, a ten thousand ton Chinese icebreaker, the Snow Dragon, became trapped by antarctic ice on its way to rescue a Russian vessel, the Academic Shokalskiy. The ship was carrying a team of global warming scientists and had become stuck in the ice floes several days earlier. The team’s mission?  To gauge the effects of climate change on the region.

Aysor.am reported that the Snow Dragon requested assistance from a nearby French ice breaker. And a third ice breaker from Australia was eventually called in.

This incident occurred in late December 2013, which is the middle of the summer in the southern hemisphere.
