Former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be the Republican nominee for the Arkansas gubernatorial race, Decision Desk HQ projects.

As of 8:13 p.m. Central Time, Sanders is leading with 80.67 percent with 26 percent of the vote in.

As Arkansas leans heavily red, the former Trump administration official will likely end up victorious in the general election in November. A March poll from the Remington Research Group shows her at 58 percent support, compared to 28 percent for her presumed Democratic opponent Chris Jones. This is unsurprising, especially when one also considers the wide unpopularity of Democrats in Washington at the moment trickling down to the state level.

If elected, Sanders will be following in the footsteps of her father, Mike Huckabee, who served as governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007. Both of them have made a name for themselves on a national scale, as the elder became known as a media personality and presidential candidate after leaving office, and the younger for her work as press secretary.

“I think paying attention to the bad policies and the failures of the Biden administration and the impact that they have on our state is critically important,” she said Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

“If they continue to fail the way that they have and they continue to, I think, but states in a difficult position, then absolutely, we’re going to call them out and we’re going to continue to talk about that.”

Sanders won the endorsements of numerous high-profile politicians including incumbent Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and former President Donald Trump. These endorsements, along with her own name recognition, arguably helped her cruise to victory. Her work actively defending the president likely gained her the trust of many Trump-supporting Arkansas voters without hesitation, which made for one less hurdle that most Republican candidates have to face.
