The Associated Press reports that Catherine Templeton “officially entered” the state’s 2018 gubernatorial race Tuesday. Templeton served in Gov. Nikki Haley’s administration, “running the state’s Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation before a stint as director of the Department of Health and Environmental Control.”

According to the Charleston [SC] Post and Courier, Sen. Tim Scott, who had been considering a possible run for governor, on Monday said “he had found ‘peace’ as a member of Congress and wasn’t likely to pursue another political office at this time.”

Unlike Templeton, Senator Scott’s gubernatorial ambitions were deterred when President Donald J. Trump nominated Gov. Nikki Haley to be the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Haley’s departure elevated Lieutenant Governor Henry McMaster to the governorship. McMaster is expected to run for a full, four-year term in 2018.

Templeton’s entry into the race sets up a likely primary battle with McMaster and Yancey McGill, who served as a Democrat state Senator and Lieutenant Governor but will run for governor as a Republican.
