A new Morning Consult poll finds that while half of registered voters say Trump’s comments claiming that federal Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel is making “very unfair rulings” in a Trump University lawsuit because of his Mexican heritage were racist, only 27 percent of Republicans do. The partisan divide is stark:

• Among all voters, 50 percent say Trump’s comments are racist, 19 percent fond then not racist, but still unacceptable and 16 percent think the comments weren’t racist and acceptable.
• Among Democrats,  75 percent say Trump’s comments are racist, 11 percent fond then not racist, but still unacceptable and 5 percent think the comments weren’t racist and  acceptable.
• Among Independents, 45 percent say Trump’s comments are racist, 17 percent fond then not racist, but still unacceptable and 13 percent think the comments weren’t racist and acceptable.
• Among Republicans, 27 percent say Trump’s comments are racist, 29 percent fond then not racist, but still unacceptable and 31 percent think the comments weren’t racist and acceptable.

The racial divide was also telling. Among minorities, 73 percent of African Americans and 65 percent of Hispanics said the comments were racist. Just under half of white voters (46 percent) said the comments as racist, while 20 percent said they weren’t racist but still unacceptable.

Americans generally don’t think a judge’s ethnicity has a major impact on decision-making. The poll found only 18 percent of voters said they thought a judge’s race or ethnicity would have a major impact on how they make their decisions.

The Morning Consult poll was conducted June 8-9 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.
