As RedState previously reported, on Saturday the House of Representatives passed a $60.8 billion Ukraine foreign aid bill (H.R. 8035) with a vote of 311-112, despite the majority of Republicans voting against it. All Republican proposed amendments, including reducing all funding to zero and eliminating non-military aid, were rejected.

House Speaker Mike Johnson Turns to Democrats for Help to Pass Aid to Ukraine

Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-LA) challenges in passing the bill demonstrated institutional and personal weaknesses among the Republican-majority conference.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally and specifically thanked Speaker Johnson in a post to X, previously Twitter, writing in a statement:

I am grateful to the United States House of Representatives, both parties, and personally Speaker Mike Johnson for the decision that keeps history on the right track.

The reaction from Democrats also didn't help with any "GOP-in-control" optics, as they cheered and waved flags on the House chamber floor. Congressman Thomas Massie, (R-KY) posted a video of the celebratory antics on social media and wrote:

In a separate post, Rep. Massie accused Johnson of, "sharing the GOP speakership with Democrats," writing:

Johnson is sharing the GOP Speakership with Democrats. To bring Ukraine spending up for a vote, he made a deal with Democrats on the procedural vote. Then he passed the bill today with every Democrat voting YEA and a majority of Republicans voting NAY.

To Massie's point, the Democrats did look extra happy with their accessories and coordinated outfits for the affair. Here is a photo uploaded by Democrat Rep. Hillary Scholeten of Michigan, posing with Rep. Brittany Pettersen of Colorado.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has threatened to bring a motion to vacate against Speaker Johnson if he brought this kind of legislation to a vote, and she has responded to the aid's passage in the House as well as Speaker Johnson being thanked by Zelenskyy, by calling him a "traitor."

In a post on social media, Rep. Greene wrote:

Zelensky thanks Speaker Mike Johnson (D-Ukraine) for sending $61 BILLION of your hard-earned tax dollars to fuel a foreign war. Johnson once again passed a bill with the help of Democrats while the majority of the Republican majority voted against it. Not only is Mike Johnson a traitor to our conference, he’s a traitor to our country.

When asked by reporters if Saturday was the day Rep. Greene would call for a vote for Speaker Johnson's ouster, she responded by saying:

I'm actually going to let my colleagues go home and hear from their constituents because I think people have been too obsessed with voting for foreign wars and the murder industry.

In a press conference after the vote, Speaker Johnson responded to questions about the potential threat of being removed as speaker, as his predecessor Kevin McCarthy was earlier in 2024. He said:

My philosophy is you do the right thing and you let the chips fall where they may. If I operated out of fear of a motion to vacate, I would never be able to do my job.

The legislation allocates $60 billion for Kyiv, $26 billion for Israel, and humanitarian aid for conflict zones such as Gaza, along with $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific region. It mandates seeking repayment of $10 billion in economic assistance from Ukraine, a concept favored by former President Trump, who advocated aid to Kyiv in loan form. However, the president can forgive these loans starting in 2026. The bill also includes provisions to divest the Chinese-owned app TikTok, or for it to be banned nationally.

The bill now heads to the Senate for final approval.
