Dems' Discord: Pro-Israel Democrat PAC Targeting 'Squad' Members in Primaries

A pro-Israel group of Democrats has entered the political arena with a strategic objective: to oust two prominent far-left "Squad" members from their congressional seats. On Wednesday, the Democratic Majority for Israel PAC issued endorsements for George Latimer, challenging Rep. Jamaal Bowman in New York, and Wesley Bell, running against Rep. Cori Bush in Missouri, in the ongoing battle for influence within the Democratic Party amid factions emerging over the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.

The decision to support challengers to "Squad" members stems from controversial comments made by the Representatives including Bowman calling reports of Israeli women being raped by Hamas terrorists "propaganda," and Bush accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing and war crimes against Palestinians.

In a TikTok post, Bowman said,

There was propaganda used in the beginning of the siege. There’s still no evidence of beheaded babies or raped women. But they still keep using that lie [for] propaganda.

After more evidence of sexual assaults against women, committed during Hamas' attack on Israel emerged, Bowman attempted to walk back the statement, saying,

I always stand against sexual violence in all forms and stand for peace for all.

Bowman also received backlash after supporting a mural of Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan, who made derogatory remarks about Jews, calling them "the synagogue of Satan" and "termites." Despite Farrakhan's clearly antisemitic remarks, Bowman argued that the mural should stay in New York.

Bowman is also the Representative implicated in and criminally charged for pulling a fire alarm in Congress, a caught-on-camera act that led to his censure by House Republicans in 2023.

Just weeks after the October 7 massacre of Israeli civilians by Hamas, in an October 29 post on social media, Bush stated,

We can't stay silent about Israel's ethnic cleansing campaign. Babies, dead. Pregnant women, dead. Elderly, dead. Generations of families, dead.

She also criticized a bipartisan vote to censure fellow Democrat and "Squad" member, Rashida Tlaib, for her anti-Israel remarks, calling it "outrageous" during a passionate speech on the House floor.

Democratic Majority for Israel PAC is the only latest group to target "Squad" members for their controversial remarks about Israel, which are increasingly mobilizing to challenge anti-Israel sentiments within the Democratic Party. The super PAC joins the Jewish Democratic Council of America (JDCA) in backing the challengers of Representatives Bowman and Bush. JDCA, known as the "Jewish Dems," made headlines last week for their first-ever endorsement of challengers against House Democrats.

Both Bowman and Bush appear to be particularly vulnerable this election cycle. As RedState previously reported, according to a poll released on Wednesday, Bowman is trailing his challenger by a substantial margin of 17 points, with Latimer holding a 52 percent to 35 percent lead over Bowman.

A February poll had Bush faring even worse in her re-election bid. Remington Research had Bush down by 22 points, with Bell at 50 percent and Bush registering only 28 percent support. Bush also has her own legal issues to contend with, as the Department of Justice announced she was under investigation for alleged misuse of government funds paid to her now-husband under the guise of paying for "security" services.

While the pair of endorsements by the Democratic Majority for Israel PAC signals a growing movement within the Democratic Party to challenge anti-Israel sentiments and hold progressives accountable, the PAC also boasts the finances to make an impact. According to Federal Election Commission filings, the PAC has over $3 million to spend in these races.
