“Ocasio-Cortez Doesn’t Get (Insert Subject Here)” could be a fun segment I do multiple times a week.

This week it’s the Berlin Wall. As pointed out by Ryan Saavedra of the Daily Wire, New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went on Instagram to call the wall immoral, and compare it to the Berlin Wall.

While Ocasio-Cortez correctly surmised that the currently ongoing southern border wall project and the Berlin wall are both walls, she fails to realize that not all walls are the same.

The Berlin wall was meant to keep East Germans trapped in their oppressive country, while the southern border wall is meant to stop criminal elements from easily entering the United States in order to keep the people within safer.

As the DailyWire pointed out, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Matt Mayer described the difference very succinctly:

The goal of the Berlin Wall: stop East Germans from escaping to West Germany, as roughly three million did from the end of World War II until the wall was built. It divided Berlin for twenty-eight years. In many ways, the Berlin Wall served as a prison wall for East Germans. At least 139 people died at the Berlin Wall. It is hard to believe it has been gone for nearly as long as it was up.

Too often, Americans use the Berlin Wall in the debate over expanding the wall on our border with Mexico. Not only does this usage cheapen the history of the Berlin Wall, it is a terrible analogy. The goal of America’s border wall is to keep people and contraband from illegally coming in to the United States, not to prevent Americans from escaping. Unlike with the Berlin Wall, the use of force on the border is significantly restricted by law, including when engaging with violent and well-armed Mexican drug cartels.

Ocasio-Cortez also noted in her Instagram live that 70 percent of America doesn’t want the wall and that it would be a monument to white supremacy.

“Let’s say you love the wall, let’s say you want it, point is, it’s wrong to hold people’s paychecks hostage for it and if you want your wall so bad, go out and convince the American people because 70% of America thinks this is the dumbest idea ever and it’s not my problem that the majority of the American public thinks it’s a scam, a sham, a monument to white supremacy,” Ocasio-Cortez continued. “It’s not my fault, not my fault.”

As Saveedra points out, Ocasio-Cortez is likely referring to a PEW poll that stated 70 percent of Democrats don’t want the wall. So either Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t get polls either, or she doesn’t really consider anyone outside of the Democrat party people.

As far as the “monument to white supremacy” goes, I’d say this really shows that Ocasio-Cortez’s mindset isn’t in a realistic space when it comes to the problems brought on by illegal immigration. All she can focus on is that it’s doing something that inconveniences non-whites, so it must be all about white racism.

This isn’t true, however. Much of the crime brought to America through its southern porous border is affecting minority communities who are often targeted for drug circulation and recruitment. Sex and child trafficking are often done with Mexican children being the item bought and sold.

On top of that, illegal immigration was discovered to hurt the black community even more than white communities according to the Center for Immigration Studies Director of Research Steven Camarota in a 2008 testimony:

A 1995 study by Augustine Kposowa concluded that, “non-whites appear to lose jobs to immigrants and their earnings are depressed by immigrants.” A 1998 study of the New York area by Howell and Mueller found that a 10-percentage-point increase in the immigrant share of an occupation reduced wages of black men about five percentage points. Given the large immigrant share of the occupations they studied, this implies a significant impact on native-born blacks.

Perhaps Ocasio-Cortez can square her comments with that, though I won’t be holding my breath.
