Parkland Survivors Push for ROTC Student Who Gave Life Saving Others During Shooting to Receive Prestigious Honor

Peter Wang was a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High that belonged to the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps with aspirations to go to the military’s West Point Academy after graduation.

On February 14th, however, Wang would sacrifice his life holding the door open for other students as they fled the gunman on that fateful day.

West Point posthumously awarded Wang admission to the academy for his bravery and valor, and while this is a great honor, many who knew him would love even more recognition for his selfless sacrifice.

Parkland survivor Cameron Kasky is currently campaigning for Wang to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“For the Presidential Medal of Freedom, there’s no better recipient,” Kasky said. “Peter lost his life defending others, which is what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to go into the military and that is a young man who deserves this honor.”

Fellow Parkland survivor Kyle Kashuv is also pushing for Wang to receive this prestigious honor and has created a petition for the White House. Kashuv’s petition currently has nearly 2,500 signatures.

“Let’s please join together, cross party lines, and ask President of the United States, Donald Trump, to posthumously award Peter the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” wrote Kashuv on the petitions page.

According to CBS Miami, Wang’s cousins paint a picture of a young man who exhibited the best in humanity:

Peter’s cousins say he was an inspiration for them as well.

“He was selfless so he was always putting everyone else before him,” said Aaron Chen.

“Every since we were children Peter’s always sharing with other people or asking other people whether they were ok, or they were hungry or were they thirsty?” said Shida Bian.

They said Peter should be an example for others.

“Peter’s selfless personality is what everyone wants to strive for and what everyone in a perfect world should be,” said Bian.

If anyone deserves this honor, it sounds as if this young man does.
