The Implosion of (former Rep.)Eric Swalwell (Formerly CA-14) has been remarkable on many levels, for one being the swiftness of his departure. The many stages that are seen in a Congresscritter’s demise normally take weeks or months to play out, but Eric manage tomimmolate his career in a matter of days.
While rumblings were heard for a time prior, the big news of his sexcapades broke on Friday afternoon. That was soon followed by calls for suspending his campaign, fellow Democrats yanking their endorsements, voter appearances being rescheduled, major donors deleting their Venmo accounts, his campaign being suspended, calls in the House for ethics investigations, and then by Monday, the announcement that he was resigning from Congress entirely.

In a week, he went from being the Democratic gubernatorial frontrunner to becoming persona non California. Impressive stuff. But in all the furor, the press was struggling mightily. Swalwell’s story was one they did not want to report on, then they praised themselves for breaking the story – despite being effectively forced into reporting independent sources the week earlier.
Then came the baffling part. The press tried to claim these sex scandals were old news that many knew about, and then they realized how this made them look deeply compliant and/or inept. (Actually, embrace the “and”...)
Now, crack one open and savor some outmoded media malpractice and misinformation.

- It was amusing to see reporters claiming prior knowledge, and then having to contend with what their lengthy silence meant for their reputations.
- One Axios reporter fell in this same trap, and when claiming she could not cover Swalwell’s actions, she proved that she had been on the case initially.
Dana Bash was unable to find evidence of the Swalwell claims, AFTER Brian Stelter raved about their network covering the Swalwell claims.
