This was a busy week for the press, with LA riot coverage to screw up and Israel attacking Iran to fumble with repeatedly. There was also a political shooting in Minnesota, a senator behaving like a rabid wildebeest in need of being spun as an attack on President Trump, and organized protests this weekend to reinterpret.
Last week was a show of the classic characteristics of all the things the press engages in that have brought them down to new lows in credibility. It serves as evidence that while recognizing their industry is in trouble, they want to do nothing to repair the self-inflicted damage.
THE CONTENDERS
ABC NEWS – The network was shamed by the Xitter post from senior reporter Terry Moran, exposing their bias as he slammed Stephen Miller in an unhinged rant. Days later Moran was ousted, for essentially breaking the first rule of Fight Club. On "Good Morning America" they diminished the violence in the riots by saying they witnessed many protesters "self-policing" to curtail the impacts. It described the anti immigration riots in L.A. as “protest-impacted” portions of the city, but at the same time had no problem with anti-immigration riots in Ireland being described as “violent”. Mary Bruce had dismissive comments about the Army parade on Saturday.
CNN – Brian Stelter criticized the press hyping the riots, DURING his extended coverage of…the riots. Juliette Kayyem slammed the effort to quell the protests, forgetting she called for this reaction during the Canadian truckers' protests. Dana Bash insisted it was not a real riot. They interviewed a city politician to blame the riots on ICE raids but instead got told it is the work of anarchists. Jake Tapper struggled with coverage of the Senator Padilla fiasco. Warner-Discovery announced it will be spinning off its failing cable channels, which include the foundering CNN.
MSNBC – John Heilman tried to sell the lie that there had been no riot activity before President Trump sent troops in to guard federal buildings. Eddie Glaude gave a contorted attempt to say the ICE raids are somehow connected to slavery. One group of pundits was shocked that the crowds at the Army Anniversary parade were not frothing MAGA war hawks. Nicolle Wallace described covering the Alex Padilla melodrama as “one of the bleakest days” she has experienced in her career.
NEW YORK TIMES – As the press is contending with how they sold Joe Biden’s mental demise as a product of false video evidence, the paper went to that same defense to claim that cheapfake videos were made of the L.A. riots. The outlet that slammed Samuel Alito for a flag outside his vacation home praised rioters for flying the Mexican flag. Annie Karni managed to spit out a sympathetic bio of Alex Padilla the same afternoon as his rampaging stunt. Peter Baker had a tough week, first suggesting after a court ruling about the AP ban that a Democrat president will be able to block news outlets – forgetting Joe Biden did this already with the New York Post. Later, he bemoaned the political divisiveness in the country while oblivious to his own newspaper doing exactly that for years now. While liberals protested No Kings Day, at the same time the paper described the Alex Soros wedding as one of “Liberal Royalty”.
THE WINNER(S)
KTLA / KABC (Tie)
The two LA local affiliates were vying with each other to deliver the most fractured reporting about the riots taking place in their city, as well as the actions of ICE agents around town.
Marc Brown delivered a commentary of the year contender as he declared there was no need to send federal troops to Los Angeles; it was only a case of people gathering to enjoy the sight of cars engulfed in flames.
ABC 7 suggested that having more troops in the city than in Iraq was a negative result.
There was a complaint that the police were using non-lethal ammunition for crowd control, because apparently it is painful.
KTLA described one mission to collect an illegal immigrant as ICE raiding the home of a pregnant woman when in truth they collected a previously deported criminal with a lengthy rap sheet.
Despite the denials the outlets were compelled to report how a body turned up at the site of some of the rioting.
