Today marks the start of Nancy Pelosi’s January 6th select committee. You’d be forgiven for not knowing about the momentous event (I didn’t realize it until 20 minutes ago, and I write on politics for a living) as no one outside the beltway has time to care about it between all the inflation and the lagging economy.
One of the people on that committee is Adam Schiff. A proven liar and long-time pusher of the Russian collusion hoax, Pelosi insisted on involving him in the “investigation” into what occurred on January 6th. Of course, we already know what happened (and Pelosi has predetermined as well), but creating a political narrative for 2022 is the point, and that will be the entire focus of the committee.
Yesterday, Schiff appeared on CNN with Anderson Cooper, perhaps to assure his detractors that he is still the person he’s always been. Here’s what he had to say.
Rep. Adam Schiff claims that if @GOPLeader Kevin McCarthy had been speaker on 9/11, “there would have been no 9/11 commission. There would have been an effort to persuade the country that it didn’t happen or it’s overblown.”

Schiff was responding to Kevin McCarthy’s criticisms yesterday of Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger as well as the complaints that McCarthy wasn’t being allowed to seat the members he wanted (which is normal procedure).
Somehow, Schiff took that as evidence that McCarthy would excuse 9/11 and would not have allowed a commission to investigate the security lapses that allowed it to happen. You know, because three hours of scuffling and trespassing where cops shot someone is completely the same thing as a massive terrorist attack that killed 3,000 people.
This is idiotic on multiple levels. One, it’s incredibly offensive to downplay the deaths of those who died on 9/11 by pretending that what happened on that day was no more serious than a few hours of inconvenience for lawmakers. Secondly, the fact that the committee Schiff is sitting on isn’t looking to do what the 9/11 commission did is also noteworthy.
For example, the 9/11 commission existed to critique government agencies for their failures and to advise on how to fix the security oversights. That is clearly not what Pelosi’s January 6th committee is being set up to do. Rather, she and her cohorts are completely obfuscating from the specific security failures that happened at the Capitol in favor of trying to spin political blame instead. That’s why Pelosi opened the committee with a USCP officer telling harrowing tales instead of getting testimony from a USCP authority on why the security situation failed. Given that, Schiff’s comparison to 9/11 fails again.
I’ll end by noting again that this is the person Liz Cheney is choosing to team up with while claiming she’s operating on principle. That’s not how any of this works. You can not join a commission alongside a dishonest hack like Adam Schiff, headed by Bennie Thompson (who objected to the electoral college in 2004), and then claim you are righteously trying to preserve the republic. Schiff’s inclusion by Pelosi has completely discredited the committee, to the extent that it ever had any credibility. If Cheney truly had any principles, she’d be calling that out. Instead, she’s taking her prime speaking slot and burning all her bridges. We’ll see how that works out for her.
