If you haven’t figured it out by now, the coronavirus pandemic has morphed into a totalitarian catch-all, whereby the powers that be see to never relinquish the control they should have never seized in the first place. Thus the newest panic, which centers around different “variants” of COVID.
You see, with this new talking point, it doesn’t matter that we have a vaccine and that cases and deaths are bottoming out. What matters is that there “could be” a new outbreak of a different variant so you better keep wearing your mask and not going to the beach.
As an example of this, here’s COVID panic porn merchant Eric Feigl-Ding articulating that viewpoint.

3) things are going as well as can be expected… #B117 variant surging in South Florida.
Why do we pretend nothing will happen? I didn’t suffer through a doctorate in epidemiology by age 23, just so that @GovRonDeSantis can pretend to govern. https://t.co/Nnn6oHIRSx

It’s not going to end well! You just wait two more weeks, you idiots!
We’ve heard all this before, and it’s no more correct now, especially in regards to Florida, than it was six months ago. This obsession with new variants is convenient, but it doesn’t mean much. Current vaccines are effective against the B117 strain (UK variant). Therefore, citations of that variant being found are completely irrelevant. It’s simply fear-mongering with no basis whatsoever. Of course, new strains are going to spread. You can not stop that, nor should we seek to with more ineffective, draconian mitigation measures.
Allegations of a “surge” are nonsense. There is no surge of any COVID variant going on in Florida. There are more B117 infections than others, but that does not mean overall cases are spiking. Feigl-Ding’s description is a purposeful sleight of hand to push a narrative that simply isn’t true.
LOL you aren't elected to anything either and you moved your family out of the country so your kids could attend in-person schools somewhere else. How many times can one person be wrong in such a short span? https://t.co/vx3p16aurx

Appeals to non-existent authority are not convincing, and they are certainly aren’t convincing in this case. Ron DeSantis is doing an objectively good job in Florida, having managed a state with the highest vulnerable population in the country to a below-average death rate and a booming economy. That drives partisan hacks insane because they wanted him to fail and still do. They want you to wear a mask forever. They want you to stay locked down forever.
The government took control it wasn’t due during this pandemic. The last thing they should be allowed to do now is seize more control based on nonsensical claims about new variants. That may be the new talking, but it should be ridiculed with prejudice. Don’t let these clowns set the narrative.
