I’m sure this will spawn dozens of breathless fact checks in the media right?
Today, acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan was testifying before the House Homeland Security Committee, specifically dealing with the emergency on the border. Then things got really weird.

“Why do these tragedies keep happening,” Rep. Underwood asked
I just want to point out how ludicrous this question is. We have over 100,000 people a month crossing the border illegally. Some of those people arrive sick, dehydrated, or otherwise dealing with physical ailments brought on by the brutal journey north. It’s actually a minor miracle that more people aren’t dying given the circumstances.
Regardless, it is Democrats who have created a magnet for migrants from Central America by refusing to reform the asylum process. For Underwood to then ask a question clearly meant to blame DHS for what is happening shows an incredible lack of self-awareness.
McAleenan proceeded to give a reasonable, accurate answer.
“They’re happening because the crisis is exceeding the resources provided,” Acting Sec. McAleenan replied. He continued, “That’s why we’ve asked for more and we’ve asked for more authority to deal with it, to prevent this crisis from happening in the first place and from the children being put at risk. We’ve deployed the funding from FY19 that Congress has authorized. We’ve increased our temporary facilities by 500 beds in [inaudible], by 500 in El Paso. We’ve got three additional soft-sided facilities coming online in June. We’ve deployed medical practitioners. We now have over 100 certified medical practitioners in our two busiest sectors. We’ve asked for more money to extend that.”
This is the truth of the matter. CBP is underfunded and under-resourced. People are arriving in huge numbers and are often detained in remote areas where it takes hours to access professional medical care. Even when people are brought back to the detention, there’s a shortage of personnel to assess those detained and often times illegal immigrants will lie about their condition so as not to draw attention to themselves. CBP is put in the awful situation by all this.
The facts aren’t really in question but McAleenan’s answer didn’t satisfy the Democrat Congresswoman.
She then proceeded to accuse his department of…murdering children.
“But people keep dying, sir,” Underwood replied. She added, “So this is obviously more than a question of resources. Congress has been more than willing to provide the resources and to work with you to address the security and humanitarian concerns. But at this point, with five kids that have died, 5,000 separated from their families, I feel like and the evidence is really clear that this is intentional. It’s intentional. It’s a policy choice being made on purpose by this administration, and it’s cruel and inhumane.” There was an audible reaction in the room when Rep. Underwood said it.
There’s no other way to interpret that except that she’s asserting CBP is intentionally killing children.
The Democrat chairman, Bennie Thompson, even asked Underwood to rephrase her comments. Her response was to reread exactly what she’d already said, again saying the deaths were intentional, so there can be no claim that she misspoke.
Republican Mike Rogers had heard enough at this point and demanded Underwood’s comments be taken out of the record.
At that point, ranking Republican member Rep. Mike Rogers said, “You cannot impugn the character of the witness by stating that he intentionally murders children. That is completely inappropriate and her words should be taken down. She was very explicit.”
“I did not say murder. I said that five children have died as a result of a policy choice that he has said…” Underwood said.
Rogers interjected, “You said it was intentional. That is murder.”
After a recess, the committee came back and voted 9-7 to remove Underwood’s comments from the record. That means some Democrats sided against her. It’s still insane that 7 Democrats actually voted to support her comments, but nothing is really that surprising anymore.
This was one of the more disgusting things I’ve heard come out of a Congressional hearing. The delusion in which many Congressional Democrats are operating under has reached astronomical levels. CBP is begging for money, telling them it’s a emergency, while Democrats refuse to even fund enough beds for the influx of illegal aliens. They refuse to fund the wall. They won’t fund additional resources.
Then when things continue to worsen, they demand to know why things are getting worse. It all makes absolutely no sense. The emergency at the border is almost wholly of their making and Democrats should be made to own it.
To witness a Congressional member try to accuse CBP of murdering kids in response to her own failures is a new low. If this were a Republican, it’d be front page news and every fact-checker on the planet would be berating them. Because this woman is a Democrat though, this episode will be memory holed in record time.
