Spice Was on the Menu at Senate GOP Luncheon As Trump, Cassidy Go at It

Earlier Wednesday, we reported on Donald Trump’s remarks following a luncheon he had with Senate Republicans to discuss the SAVE America voter ID act, which the president is pushing hard for them to pass — even if it means nuking the filibuster.

I mentioned that there were reports that there was a bit of a dust-up between Trump and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) over the status of the Iran negotiations. Relations were already strained between the two after Cassidy lost his primary election in May. The president had endorsed Cassidy’s challenger, Rep. Julia Letlow (LA-05), who came in first and will head to a runoff on June 27.

As more information comes out, it’s been revealed that things got pretty heated:

What started as a push to pass Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act transformed into Trump railing against Republicans for allowing a war powers resolution handcuffing his authorities in Iran to pass on Tuesday.

And that spurred a confrontation with Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., who Trump campaigned against and defeated earlier this year.

"He asked, ‘why would anybody vote for the War Powers Act?’," Cassidy said afterward. "As he continued, I said, ‘is that a rhetorical question, or would you like to really know?’ He said, ‘I'd like to know.’"

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) on his spat with President Trump at Senate GOP lunch:

“I'm not going to be bullied when I'm trying to get answers for the American people.”

On Trump calling him a lunatic: “Can I imagine that the president called me things that would be said on a school on a playground? Yeah, I can imagine that.”

Following the lunch, Trump said that the party was mostly united, but admitted that he wasn’t a fan of everyone in the room. I think we can guess the name of at least one of those lawmakers he was referring to.

Four GOP Senators Join Democrats to Rebuke Trump on Iran, Hand Tehran a Talking Point

Cassidy joined three other Republican senators (Rand Paul [KY], Susan Collins [ME], and Lisa Murkowski [AK]) to vote for a symbolic war powers resolution Tuesday that demands Trump seek congressional approval before ordering any further military action in Iran.

Cassidy claimed the argument came when he pressed the president on the status of negotiations. He admitted he lost his temper to the point where his colleagues told him to stand down:

"I stood and said, ‘you have not told the American people what's going on. It was supposed to last four weeks, it's lasted four months,’" he continued. "‘Our original objectives have not been achieved, and I want to know what's going on.’"

Then began the shouting match, which Cassidy blamed on the "Irish in me," until ultimately he was asked to sit down by his colleagues.

🚨Report: Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy and President Trump got into a shouting match during the Republican Senate lunch meeting today

At one point President Trump told Cassidy to sit down, but Cassidy refused and raised voice.

President Trump called him a “lunatic”

Cassidy referred to Trump as “brother.”

President Trump told him he wasn’t his “brother.”

It’s highly doubtful that Trump will miss the lawmaker come January ‘27 when he will become “former Senator Cassidy.”

Editor's Note: For decades, former presidents have been all talk and no action. Now, Donald Trump is eliminating the threat from Iran once and for all.
