I live in Wokefornia, but I didn’t realize just how toxic it had become until I attended the sixth-grade graduation of one of my daughters back in the day. The girl who gave the class speech —I have no recollection if they called it “valedictorian” in middle school — started talking about loving and respecting each other. Well, that’s nice.
But then I got confused. “They” should do this, “they” should do that.” Who should — who is they? I simply couldn’t follow her story.
Then it suddenly hit me like a wet fish to the head: she was speaking in woke-ese and refusing to use terms like “he” and “she,” making her speech incomprehensible. This is sixth freaking grade, I thought to myself. What is the matter with this kid?
The reason I found it so noxious is not because I don’t believe “they” had a right to express their opinion (however weird it was for someone that age), but it’s that she hijacked an event that was meant for many people. She partially ruined the ceremony for my daughter, and even if my girl truthfully didn’t care all that much, it certainly made my wife's and my experience more negative. My father had come for the moment, and I cringed in the audience as I wondered what the heck he was thinking.
We’re all there to celebrate her life moment, and we’re talking about gender identity?
This was not “they’s” graduation — it was everybody’s in the auditorium, and “they” tried to turn it into her own personal wokefest.
On social media, leftists are crying about a similar situation that occurred at Clayton High School in North Carolina, where the valedictorian abruptly departed from her prepared remarks on Sunday and went on a vapid diatribe about ICE, Israel, and desperate third-world countries, seemingly demanding that her classmates solve all those issues. All they have to do is say something, and everything will miraculously be solved.
My vote for Teacher of the Year goes to the high school’s principal, Melissa Moore, who barged into the diatribe, grabbed the wokester’s arm, and yanked away the mic. Special footage here, folks (the action starts at the 21-second mark):

I honestly can’t tell if the cheers heard near the end of the clip were for the principal’s actions or for the valedictorian’s harangue. I’d like to think the former, but as our Sister Toldjah knows, North Carolina can be confounding.
Not surprisingly, the activist airhead didn’t seem to learn her lesson:
The Muslim teen proceeded to whine on TikTok last week, accusing the school of refusing to give her a diploma after the now-viral stunt, moaning that it made her feel “oppressed.”
However, the teen’s diploma has since been “awarded,” Johnston County Public Schools said Tuesday.
That's a shame.

Not only did Leen Hijaz hijack the proceedings with her juvenile speech, but her diatribe consisted of empty air. Does she actually think that by throwing out every conflict and difficulty on the globe, and telling high school students to “use their voices,” we’re going to magically make the earth a Utopia? Does she think saying, “There are many poor people in Haiti, talk amongst yourselves” is a strategy? Sure, there’s plenty of darkness and evil in the world, but does she think throwing out a laundry list of hot-button issues to a bunch of 18-year-olds simply celebrating a milestone and wondering what their next steps in life are going to be is somehow going to be miraculous?
No — it’s just more virtue signaling puffery from a person who’s caught the Woke Mind Virus.

I get that she’s young, and that 18-year-olds' brains aren’t fully developed yet — which is why the Democrats are so insistent that we lower the voting age to 16 — but what to liberals is “brave” is to normal people “selfish.”
This was other people’s graduation too, and although Hijaz is smirking now, she might find the hangover is not so fun.
