It’s not often that a Boeing 767 tries to land on the roof of a delivery vehicle — and the driver survives. While that may be a little bit of a tongue-in-cheek description of what happened Sunday at Newark Liberty International Airport, it’s not too far off, as our Nick Arama reported.
The low-flying 767 was incoming from Venice, Italy, and it first brushed the top of a bakery delivery truck with its wheels before striking a light pole:
The plane was trying to land at the airport, but came in too low and also hit a light pole. How does one end up going so low? One has to think there are going to be a lot of questions that are going to be asked there.
Fortunately, despite the very scary hit, the driver, who was taken to the hospital, only suffered minor injuries from glass to his arm.
Although the flight was carrying 221 passengers and ten crewmembers, there were no serious injuries. Nevertheless, it was quite a disturbing event, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Monday on the Fox Business Channel that it was unacceptable:
.@SecDuffy on the United Airlines collision at Newark: This is unacceptable. We have really well-trained pilots. This should never happen in America. An incident like this, we study and we learn from, and we take action on. That’s why America is the safest place to fly. pic.twitter.com/yc8i1l7SBF

Duffy:
I don't want to get ahead of the investigation. It seems pretty clear - a light pole at least was hit; was the truck hit? That will be ascertained as the NTSB arrives today. The FAA is going to arrive today. They're in contact with United [Airlines].
This is unacceptable.
We have really well-trained pilots. This is one.
This should never happen in America. But here's what happens, though, from an incident like this, the big and small instances we study, we look at, and we learn from, and we take action on.
And that's why America is the safest place to fly. We have the safest skies, the busiest skies, bar none, and we're the best because we look at every incident and learn from it and take action.
You may notice another thing Duffy said: namely, that authorities have not officially confirmed that the plane struck the delivery truck. There is plenty of video footage showing that it certainly appeared to, however.
The video is insane, and it would seem a miracle that this guy survived:

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has yet to confirm the apparent truck strike either:

Sunday’s event involving a United Airlines Boeing 767 that struck a light pole on final approach to Runway 29 at Newark Liberty International Airport has been classified as an accident due to the extent of damage to the airplane. An NTSB investigator arrived in Newark this morning to conduct interviews of the flight crew.
It is a weird and frightening incident, and it's miraculous that there was no loss of life. Now, we need to know how that could have happened. Other travelers have noted that planes have to fly extremely low to land at Newark:

Just look at how insanely low planes fly when they cross right over the NJ Turnpike on final approach to EWR.
