Tech mogul and world’s richest man Elon Musk was a staunch supporter of Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign, and he funneled hundreds of millions in donations to Republican coffers. After the president took office, Musk brought daily headlines and GOP enthusiasm with his tenure at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he and his team — complete with young techies with names like “Big Balls” — regularly announced massive discoveries of fraud in the federal government.
It was a time of high energy and hope, and Trump and Musk were seemingly the best of friends.
Then it at least partially fell apart, as Musk’s DOGE tenure came to an end, and he grew unhappy with Trump over the One Big Beautiful Bill, which he called a "pork-filled abomination.” In his anger, the Tesla CEO dropped some unpleasant tweets, including one in July attempting to tie the president to the Jeffrey Epstein saga, and the relationship grew chilly. It’s warmed in recent months, but still has not returned to the “buddy buddy” days of its heyday.
On New Year’s Day, however, Elon hinted that he’s planning on once again using his vast resources to help the Grand Old Party — in a big way. Responding to a conservative user’s post saying that he was “all in,” Musk seemed to confirm it. “America is toast if the radical left wins,” he wrote in a post that’s garnered 25 million views:
America is toast if the radical left wins.

Elon Musk Takes a Big Step Toward Trump With This 'Regret' Post
When Musk indicates that he’s going to be involved, it probably means he’s going to do more than donate $25 to the local school board candidate. He brings the big guns:
The world’s richest man has reportedly already made significant contributions to Republicans in 2026 congressional races, according to Axios.
The size of Musk’s recent donations won’t be known publicly until campaign finance reports are released later this month.
Musk shelled out more than $290 million in the 2024 election cycle, making him the top political donor of that year by nearly $100 million.
Musk’s New Year’s Day post included a clip of Trump patting him on the arm in November, when the former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief made his return to the White House after a nasty breakup with the president.

It remains unclear how involved Elon Musk will become with the midterm election efforts, or whether his relationship with Trump can ever be fully repaired. Never say never, though — if you could have predicted that Secretary of State “Little Marco” Rubio and the president would ever become friendly after their nasty presidential campaigns in 2016, you might be named Nostradamus.
Musk is a complicated character, as is Trump, and they both are adept at making friends and enemies. Nevertheless, I would welcome Musk’s efforts because I thought he brought much-needed energy and passion to Trump’s campaign, which I think unquestionably contributed to the president’s eventual victory. Not only that, he brought money, lots and lots of money.
If they could just avoid personal spats, it could be a positive development because, as the multi-billionaire wrote, if the progressives take over again and get their way, it “[w]on’t be America anymore.”
Editor's Note: The left hates Elon Musk precisely because he’s effective.
