Donald Trump recently criticized Benjamin Netanyahu, saying the Israeli Prime Minister didn’t help in the U.S. effort to kill Iranian General Qasem Soleimani and was also unprepared for the heinous October 7 Hamas terror attacks.
However, those remarks didn’t seem to hurt him at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s conference Saturday, where the former president’s speech reportedly “earned far and away the loudest standing ovation” of any of the speakers. It “turned into a demonstration of the former president’s dominance in the race — and how swiftly his perceived missteps can be forgotten,” wrote another outlet.
Trump began his speech by proclaiming his support for Israel as it is embroiled in a war with Hamas:
"I love Israel. I love Israel…
"To every Israeli and every American touched by these barbaric activities – we stand with you," he said, blaming the attacks on Joe Biden.
"We had no problem for four years – this is unthinkable. If you spill a drop of American blood, we will spill a gallon of yours," he said.
He also promised that as president, he would deport all "resident aliens" who join the many pro-Palestinian protests that have been breaking out across the country. He also called for a harsh response to Hamas:
"Every single life that is lost in this conflict is on the shoulders of Hamas and Hamas alone," Trump said. "And I think you have to really add in the word Iran," he said, further attacking Biden for seeking to provide humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.
"We're not going to start wars, but the wars have to be finished before peace," he said, coming out against attempting to build democracies in countries "out of quicksand."
"I will stop World War III, you will not have World War III," he said. "We will restore peace through strength," praising Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for calling on Biden to resign following the attack.
"Under my presidency, I kept Israel safe and the world safe. Today the world is blowing up. It would have never happened if I was president. Ukraine would never have happened, inflation never would have happened," he said.
"They'll be avenged even beyond what you're thinking about," he said about the Israeli victims of the Hamas attacks.
Trump took to Truth Social to reiterate that he would seek revenge on anyone who attacked America or Americans:
Former U.N Ambassador Nikki Haley also spoke, and the GOP presidential candidate used the opportunity to hit at Trump:
“As president, I will not compliment Hezbollah,” she said. “Nor will I criticize Israel’s prime minister in the middle of tragedy and war.”
Haley said the country couldn’t afford “four years of chaos, vendettas and drama” and implied that Trump wouldn’t be the party’s strongest general election candidate.
The other GOP candidates at the event, including former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, did not criticize Trump directly. “We’re going to continue to have bad outcomes unless we change horses and have new people elected to leadership,” said DeSantis.
Trump has maintained a large advantage in the polls and is still far ahead of his chief competitor, DeSantis, by a margin of 59 to 13 percent. Trump's vice president Mike Pence dropped out of the running Saturday after failing to attract enough support to continue.
