The takeover of the Democratic Party by Democratic Socialists is like nothing we have seen in recent times. "Leaders" like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) are frozen with deer-in-the-headlights stares and are clueless as to what to do. A few Democrats are willing to speak out about the dangerous slide their party is taking, and even some Democratic icons are making their voices heard. But what they don't realize is that no one is listening, and that the divide within the Democratic Party is not only between Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) types and the establishment; it is generational.

So far, in the primary election cycle, at least three of what you might call Democrat Party icons have spoken out, trying to warn their party of their impending suicide with their embrace of socialism. In July, former Obama Chief of Staff and former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel went first. In a Wall Street Journal Op-Ed, he addressed the "Bernie Bros," but we all know who he was speaking to: Democratic Socialists. He rightly pointed out that issues like "defund the police, open borders, abolish prisons, releasing violent criminals onto the streets, and degrading the flag," are "electoral losers." The problem is that if people under 30 know who Rahm Emanuel is, they know he was an Obama guy, and that is not left enough anymore.
Another blast from the past is veteran Democrat strategist Donna Brazile. Brazile has been a fixture in Democratic politics since the 70s, when she began her career as a volunteer on Jimmy Carter's 1976 campaign. She went on to serve as Al Gore's campaign manager in 1999, becoming the first African-American woman in American history to manage a presidential campaign. Brazile recently appeared on ABC's "This Week" with her old buddy George Stephanopoulos and urged the Democrat Party to "define itself," and not “get caught in this socialist wave.” She also made a very clear distinction between the DSA and the Democrat Party, almost at the risk of sounding like she was dismissing the DSA. But again, her last official duties in the Democratic Party were serving as interim Democratic National Committee chair in 2011 and again in 2016. Many of the DSA faithful, if they weren't in middle or high school, were in preschool and have never heard of Donna Brazile.

Last, but never least, the Ragin' Cajun himself, James Carville. Carville's claim to fame is getting Bill Clinton elected in 1992 — some 34 years ago. Now in his 80s, Carville is entertaining...in his own way, and spends his days hopping from podcast to podcast, railing against President Trump. He recently told Fox News Channel's Jacqui Heinrich, "I am not going to be in the same party with Hasan Piker." Crazy as he can sound, that is to Carville's credit. He has been around the block enough times to know that Piker is beyond bad news for the Democratic Party. But if you are in that prime demographic of 18 to 34, you know James Carville as that loony old man who sits in his LSU hoodies ranting to a camera. He is not the future of the Democrat Party; it's Piker, who is telling the Democrat Party in the clearest of terms what the DSA's plans for them really are, and it's not pretty.

Rahm Emanuel, Donna Brazile, and James Carville all represent the Democrat Party in a different time and place. There were disagreements, to be sure, but no one was called a Nazi. The problem is that all three of them are understandably trying to save the party they knew. But it is hard to get the people on board who need to be when they are too young to even know who you are.
