Is Congress Slowly Becoming an Old Folks Home? The List of Dinosaur Democrats Who Refuse to Quit

One of the biggest stories to come out of Washington, D.C. in a while is the books, most of them written by mainstream media types, with the help of various assorted insiders and aides, that are "revealing" (now that it is safe) just how bad Joe Biden's mental state was becoming during his four years in the White House. Add to that the number of Americans who thought that at 82, Joe Biden was just too old to run for reelection. Unfortunately, old age sneaks up on all of us. But don't tell that to several members of Congress, who are older than Joe Biden and refuse to quit.

Among many things plaguing the Democrat Party seems to be the thought that advanced age does not apply to them, and several older Dems are readying themselves for another congressional run in 2026. Of the 30 House Democrats who are 75 years old or older, more than half confirm they are running for yet another term.

So, who are these septuagenarians and octogenarians who think they are somehow channeling their inner Peter Pan and are not aging gracefully? Many are the usual suspects. They include Reps. Maxine Waters (D-CA), 86; Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), 82; John Garamendi (D-CA), 80; Doris Matsui (D-CA), 80; Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), 80; David Scott (D-GA), 79; Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), 78; Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), 78; Jerry Nadler (D-NY), 77; Al Green (D-TX), 77; Bennie Thompson (D-MS), 77; Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), 77; Kweisi Mfume (D-MD), 76; John Larson (D-CT), 76; Richard Neal (D-MA), 76; Lois Frankel (D-FL), 76; Steve Cohen (D-TN), 75; and Joyce Beatty (D-OH), 75. Oh, and let's not forget the grande dame herself, Nancy Pelosi, who, at 85, long ago filed her reelection papers, although whether she actually does run may be up in the air. But the best part is this isn't even the entire list.

Even the health issues that come with getting older don't seem to convince these people that it may be time to hang 'em up. Scott was forced to step down as a ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee for health reasons, and Larson suffered a partial seizure on the House floor during a speech in February. But most of these members no doubt agree with Rep. Doggett and see their age as just proof of their experience. Doggett said in a statement,

“To vigorously continue the fight against the lawlessness of Trump and Trumpism, I filed my intent to seek reelection last November. As the first Democratic member to call for Biden to step aside, I questioned his ability, not his age. I expect my personal ability, accessibility, and experience to be an asset.”

Frankel said, "It's taken me 12 years to become ranking member on a subcommittee for Appropriations. It's important to me and my constituents." But it was Cohen who may have given up the dirty little secret for many of his colleagues, saying, "My constituents need help from D.C. and I'm effective in bringing home important funding." Translation: "I'm bringing home the pork."

So, why is it that these dinosaurs in Congress just can't pry their bony fingers off the trappings of power? Is the plan to pull a Dianne Feinstein and literally stay until they die? At the time of her death in 2023 at age 90, Feinstein was the longest-serving woman in the Senate. Quite an achievement indeed, but as early as 2020, there were concerns about her cognitive abilities.

The gerontocracy of the Democrat Party may be convinced that their party and the nation cannot go on without them. But what they are really doing is giving more fuel to the argument made by Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, David Hogg, who may lose his position for daring to suggest that the party needs fresh blood. Hogg is not alone; one anonymous Democrat described the never-ending campaigns of elderly members of Congress as "insane."

The fate of Joe Biden has clearly not scared off these members of Congress. If you are a young Democrat, the message to you is "back off, sonny."
