Hunter Biden, one of President Joe Biden's sons, appeared in a Los Angeles federal courtroom on Thursday, and pleaded not guilty to all nine charges against him, during a brief arraignment hearing. The government is alleging that Biden evaded paying taxes on earnings from foreign entities, to the tune of "at least $1.4 million":
The first son pleaded not guilty Thursday afternoon to to nine charges alleging that he failed to pay at least $1.4 million in federal taxes between 2016 and 2019 on foreign earnings that are the focus of a House impeachment inquiry into his father, President Biden.[...]
The first son “spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills,” according to the 56-page indictment filed last month, including payments for “drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature, in short, everything but his taxes.”

The appearance in Los Angeles is before U.S. District Judge Mark C. Scarsi, who was appointed by then-President Donald Trump.

- The Government said they’ve already provided all Brady (potentially exculpatory) material they needed to produce to Hunter's attorneys.
- Hunter's attorney, Abbe Lowell. made big deal of the aborted plea deal in July 2023 (the infamous sweetheart deal), but alleges that congressional interference in prosecutorial decisions/undue interference in the process led to the current charges so they want to have evidentiary hearings on that. They maintain the plea deal from July is actually in effect and nullifies these charges.
- The Government's response is that decisions made within the prosecution team aren’t subject to evidentiary hearing/examination.
- Leo Wise (the prosecutor) said of the July plea deal falling apart, that there was nothing untoward; "Pleas fall apart all the time.”
