My colleague Kira Davis wrote on Tuesday about the “soft bigotry” of educational institutions dumbing-down testing standards to “help” minority students, in The Spectator US.
Now, there’s another example of Progressives showing their true feelings about the very children they’re supposed to be teaching.
Jeff Gregorich, the superintendent of the Hayden-Winkelman School District in Arizona, has been all over the media since Monday, over his fears about re-opening schools in person. Sadly, one of his district’s teachers passed away from COVID-19 over the summer, while taking part in training on distance learning.
No surprise, then, that the Progressive Left and its media allies have latched on to the Wuhan coronavirus-fear-porn story, which not only garnered Gregorich an interview with the Washington Post, for its “Voices From the Pandemic” tragedy cycle…

AZ School Superintendent Jeff Gregorich on reopening schools or losing funding

…but also won the school administrator a guest spot with MSNBC’s uber-prog Chris Hayes Monday night. And NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell breathlessly shared on the network’s homepage about the story, too:
Jeff Gregorich, superintendent of the Hayden-Winkelman Unified School District in Arizona, is facing pressure from the state’s governor to reopen school in person, despite already losing a teacher to the coronavirus. He says, “I don’t believe that we can keep the teachers and the students safe,” under the current conditions, and that he’s concerned that children could spread the virus to their families, including grandparents in multigenerational homes.

But in an interview Tuesday on Fox Business network’s “Varney & Company,” Gregorich, who is white, said the quiet part out loud about how leftist view their minority charges in the classroom. He told Stuart Varney:
“What worries me most is that these kids, they may get it and be asymptomatic. But I have so many of my children, students go home to their multigeneration families in a close-knit community. And I don’t see how it’s not going to be transmitted to their grandparents and throughout our community.”
Varney countered with two points. “You can’t make schools 100 percent safe….You’ll never have absolute safety in the schools.” Then added, “By going to non-classroom education, going to online education, you are depriving students of a good education — because we just don’t have it set up…. And you’re condemning them to… I’m going to call it, “substandard education.”
Gregorich wasn’t prepared for pushback and rambled incoherently for several seconds about vaccines or something.
And there’s a reason he didn’t have a good answer. Missing from both the leftist media’s reporting and Varney’s interview were a damning set of statistics about the superintendent’s school district.
According to Public School Review.com,
Minority enrollment is 91% of the student body (majority Hispanic), which is more than the Arizona public school average of 62% (majority Hispanic).”
For the 2020 school year, there are 2 public schools in Hayden-Winkelman Unified School District, serving 255 students.
And his schools are failing — big time:
Public school in Hayden-Winkelman Unified School District have an average math proficiency score of 22% (versus the Arizona public school average of 45%), and reading proficiency score of 27% (versus the 44% statewide average). This district’s average school ranking is in the bottom 50% of public schools in Arizona.
And there it is. All of this national hullabaloo is over a tiny, public school system that’s failing mostly minority students. But the Left can’t let that be the story. Just more casual racism on their part.
