If the United States was on Facebook, its relationship to the United Nations would be “It’s Complicated.”

Now, Joe Biden’s administration has complicated that 75-year relationship even more. And will likely surprise many of his own countrymen.

Biden has – are you sitting down? – invited the United Nations to send a team of its experts to investigate racism within the United States.

No, seriously. For real!

As RedState reported last night, Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed this week that his department had transmitted the invitation to the U.N., which was built in New York City at the invitation of previous Democrat presidents, Franklin Roosevelt and then Harry Truman.

“Responsible nations,” Blinken declared, “must not shrink from scrutiny of their human rights record; rather, they should acknowledge it with the intent to improve.”

Biden’s made a big deal out of the awful specter of racism during his primary and presidential campaigns. Having an agreed evil like that is also a relatively easy way for an old-fashioned politician like him to keep supporters in line with him and against you-know-who.

Perceived racism recently seems to be everywhere, even in some Biden remarks. And earlier this year Biden’s Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg, declared that even the American system of Interstate highways was racist.

Remember back in the 2012 presidential campaign when Biden was on a ticket with a black president, he told a Virginia audience of largely blacks what his Republican opponents had in mind: “They’re going to put y’all back in chains.”

Maybe Biden was misspeaking again. Chaining up blacks has actually never been a GOP platform plank since the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, freed all the Southern slaves during the Civil War.

And then his Republican successor, Ulysses Grant, sent federal troops into the South to guarantee blacks could vote despite the Ku Klux Klan and Democrat politicians, a step that helped elected GOP presidents for three succeeding decades.

Grant’s controversial enforcement action was an important legal precedent that another GOP president, Dwight Eisenhower, used in 1957 in Little Rock to integrate the high school despite the adamant opposition of Gov. Orval Faubus, a Democrat.

Because of or despite Biden’s hyperbolic charge, the Obama-Biden ticket did win reelection in 2012, albeit with nearly five million fewer votes than in 2008.

So, race and Biden’s belief that he is the only choice for blacks have been a key rallying cry to his political fortunes. Recall during his Delaware basement campaign Biden claimed that a black interviewer could not be black if he didn’t support Biden.

And then Critical Race Theory achieved prominence during his days, arousing strong emotions over teaching it in schools. The dusty academic concept holds that racism is not merely the product of individual bias or prejudice, but is also fundamentally embedded in U.S. legal systems and historic policies requiring rigorous eradication top to bottom.

Now, no doubt a team of United Nations investigators charged with probing racism in the United States is going to find racism. People will find what they’re looking for. And the Biden folks will use those results to prove the need for more anti-racism programs and CRT.

Originally, Europe was ruled out as the UN’s home given the devastation of World War II and the colossal failure there of the previous League of Nations, which the U.S. never joined. So, the UN ended up on prime NYC real estate along the East River when John D. Rockefeller Jr. bought the land in 1946 for $8.5 million, back before “trillion” — when a million was a lot of money.

Well before being invited to investigate its host country, the UN has had a rocky relationship with New York and the U.S. Its annual fall General Assembly sessions with VIPs moving here and there daily tie up street traffic.

Many delegates and staff do not endear themselves locally by their behaviors and abusing their diplomatic immunity, especially in terms of illegal parking and driving. Early in his presidency, Ronald Reagan suspended U.S. dues payments, which now comprise about 22 percent of its budget, over the UN’s bloated bureaucracy and policies.

The ideal of an international body dedicated to seeking world peace is a swell one. Most Americans, including every candidate for Miss America, would agree that World Peace is an admirable goal, if unattainable realistically.

However, the reality of the UN, which I covered one year, is sullied by all the frailties and faults that erupt in any human organization.

In many ways the UN is much like a mammoth, aberrant PTA with strutting members talking endlessly about favorite causes, often hypocritically, arguing over priorities and playing to invisible audiences back home. This often overshadows the UN’s valiant, ongoing peacekeeping forces that protect the innocents by separating fighting forces.

To US eyes, UN activities are too often petty and a waste of money and time for adults, which is also often true.

Now comes the Biden administration using UN credibility to confirm and drive its politically useful anti-racism agenda, which is certain to alienate many.

“I urge all U.N. member states to join the United States in this (anti-racism) effort,” Blinken said, “and confront the scourge of racism, racial discrimination and xenophobia.”

Blinken added that the U.S. welcomed the U.N. Human Rights Council work. He said the invitation to racism investigators was just the first step in the Biden administration’s plan to issue a standing invitation to all of the organization’s experts on human rights issues to address systemic U.S. racism.
