Police -- they're tasked with catching the bad guys. But these days, they're also ordered to celebrate diversity. Coppers may not have asked Al Capone for his pronouns; but today, Mr./Ms./Mx. Capone would get hir/zir/xyr chance to be "seen."
Relatedly, the North Carolina Department of Justice (NCDOJ) is eyeing an update to its standards for officer instruction. The state's Justice Academy currently puts recruits through 16 weeks -- 640 hours -- of remaking, by way of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET).
From the website:
[BLET] Curriculum is designed to prepare entry-level individuals with the cognitive and physical skills needed to become certified law enforcement officers in North Carolina. ... The course is comprised of 36 separate blocks of instruction to include topics such as Firearms, Driver Training, Motor Vehicle Law, and Arrest, Search and Seizure. The BLET course is filled with practical exercises and an extensive ethics section that is woven throughout the training experience.
The BLET course has been thoroughly researched, legally reviewed and contains the most current law enforcement information available.
Participants must be felony-free U.S. citizens at least 20 years of age. A high school diploma or GED is also standard. Speaking of standards -- and of "practical exercises" -- North Carolina's DOJ wants to make sure its civil servants are brushed up on social politics. They may know about men and women, but what of cats and birds and other identity options open to all self-realizing Americans? The NCDOJ has an idea.
As part of a training overhaul, experts have proposed that the official Course Management Guide link to a page providing over five dozen gender-identity terms. It's a long list; but when the binary's myth-busted, the sky's the limit.

Where "gendering" is concerned, North Carolina may be hoping to halt any on-the-job "hate" -- a term now used, it seems, in place of the outdated "disagreement." The state is certainly concerned with hate where it intersects with crime -- AKA "hate crime." Toward fighting it, prospective cops are supplied with two sources for lessons on the topic: the Human Rights Campaign, which has declared a National State of Emergency for LGBTQ+ Americans; and the Anti-Defamation League, which called for Tucker Carlson's firing in 2021.
"Hate Crimes," incidentally, is the section under which the link to North Carolina's ordained 68 gender-identity terms appears. The Healthline.com tutorial also sheds light on your lap -- there are a minimum of three biological sexes:
Many people grew up with a simplistic idea of gender and sex: that there are two sexes, male and female, that “match” with two genders, man and woman.
In reality, neither gender nor sex is binary.
Of course, the whole of past humanity grew up with no idea about "gender," as it did not yet exist. Regardless, if you're eventually arrested in North Carolina, maybe you can ignite a conversation with the well-trained officers -- about one of the following:
- Aliagender: A nonbinary gender identity that doesn’t fit into existing gender schemas or constructs
- Aporagender: Both an umbrella term and nonbinary gender identity describing the experience of having a specific gender that’s different from man, woman, or any combination of the two.
- Gendervoid: A term that describes someone without a gender identity. Although it’s similar to agender, gendervoid is usually associated with a feeling of loss or lack.
- Graygender: A gender term that describes someone who experiences ambivalence about gender identity or expression, and doesn’t fully identify with a binary gender that’s exclusively man or woman.
- Intergender: A nonbinary gender identity that describes the experience of having a gender that falls somewhere in between woman and man or is a mix of both man and woman.
- Maverique: This nonbinary gender identity emphasizes the inner experience of gender. It describes those who experience gender or have a core gender identity that’s independent of existing categories and definitions of gender, man or woman, masculine or feminine, and androgynous or neutral.
- Neutrois: This nonbinary identity and umbrella term is used to describe people who have a gender that isn’t exclusively man or woman. Neutrois can be a broader term encompassing other gender identities, such as nonbinary, agender, genderfluid, or genderless.
- Novigender: People who use this gender identity experience having a gender that can’t be described using existing language due to its complex and unique nature.
- Omnigender: A nonbinary gender identity that describes people who experience all or many gender identities on the gender spectrum simultaneously or over time. Similar to pangender.
Or:
- Genderf***: Similar to the term “gender bender,” this term involves the act of combating or dismantling the gender binary and stereotypes through a gender identity, expression, or presentation that challenges existing norms and expectations in a given cultural context.
However it ends up, North Carolina's new training program -- which tentatively increases the hours to 868 across 24 weeks -- is set for effect in 2025.
As for where the state is likely headed, so goes, perhaps, the future of all American policemen, policewomen, and policegenderf***s.
