Medical Professor Claims Not Masking Is 'Racist, Ableist and Classist'

Are you a racist and a classist? Put otherwise, do you not keep your countenance covered by cloth? About those who flash their face-holes, corrosive conclusions must be drawn — so posits a professor.

University of British Columbia (UBC) medical instructor Dr. Amy Tan’s LinkedIn page lists a host of impressive credentials:

Director, Teacher Assessment-Faculty Development, UBC Faculty of Medicine; Clinical Associate Professor, UBC Faculty of Medicine; Adjunct Professor, Dept of Family Medicine, University of Calgary

As reported by True North, on February 21st, Dr. Amy tweeted a diagnosis:

Not masking is racist, ableist, and classist.

Evidently, such skin-based bigotry is KKK-ish. Amy included a fellow social media user’s explanation.

@ReesiePeacie’s point about prejudice was four-pronged:

For when I say not masking is racist:

  • BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) are the worst impacted in this pandemic.
  • The majority of the very few people I see still wearing masks are BIPOC.
  • Asian countries have been wearing masks during flu seasons pre-2020.
  • Increase of anti-Asian hate/violence.

America’s COVID chapter is now years’ long. Will it ever end? Institutionally, not without a fight:

Back to Dr. Amy, she dances to the jukebox of justice. Her website — “Reflections on COVID-19, Antiracism, Health Equity & Justice, Grief, Palliative Care, (and) Healthcare Communication” — features a graphic addressing all of the following:

  • Sexism
  • Ableism
  • Anti-Muslim Hate
  • Settler-Colonialism
  • Cisgenderism
  • Heterosexism
  • Neurodiversity
  • People of Color
  • Intersexuality
  • Transgenderism
  • Indigenous Peoples

In the image, rays of discrimination shoot out from the center of “Power and Privilege” — occupied by neurotypical, abled, white cisgender males.

“Why must Black, Indigenous, racialized women and nonbinary physicians endure racist harm in the workplace in silence and isolation?” she asks.

The doctor recently posted a photo of herself sporting a giant mask. Her caption:

Met up with some fellow COVID-conscious friends on a lovely cafe patio and finally put…my #MaskSquad rose gold decal onto my @flo_mask! Love it @nickelpin!

She’s doing her part. Will millions of North Americans soon follow suit? Among those who read the news, it isn’t likely:

So goes, purportedly, racism, classism, and ableism.
