From now on, all kids in Chicago Public Schools can use the restroom that makes them most comfortable.

In a video posted online, top Title IX officers Camie Pratt and Deb Spraggins herald the news:

“The new school year is off to a strong start as we’ve welcomed our students back to our school buildings five days each week. On top of ensuring that each of our schools is a safe learning environment, we’re also taking steps to create more inclusive and supportive schools. One change that will be implemented this school year relates to our school bathrooms. In compliance with new federal guidelines, all CPS students and staff will have fair and equitable access to bathroom facilities that align with their gender identity. We will be providing all schools with updated signage that makes our bathrooms more inclusive. It will identify the fixtures available in each restroom and make it clear that all restrooms are open for use by anyone who feels comfortable. … This is an incredibly important step to increase gender equity for all, which is why we will be requiring all schools to post this signage by December 1st of this school year.”

The video wraps by championing “more inclusive, equitable, and safe schools.”

“We look forward to having a safe and successful school year at every school in every neighborhood across Chicago,” Officer Camie says.

The new signs will trumpet “Girls+” and “Boys+” while stating, “All who feel comfortable are welcome to use this restroom.”

Of course, any students not wishing to use the restroom with those of the opposite sex will now forcibly be made uncomfortable in those rooms.

But where ideology is concerned, that’s the result of “inclusivity” — you cannot simultaneously side with all people who think and want different things. When you include one thing, you exclude another.

As for the new policy, questions come to mind.

Putting entirely aside any notions of transgenderism and those who genuinely perceive themselves in alternative ways, why is the school district itself instituting such a change?

Why are the Powers That Be — adults who grew up in a world without the concept of “gender identity” — sweeping the system in such a way?

Why would a group of leaders take an idea that has never existed ’til now and base such broad alteration upon it?

Even if the goal is bathroom-based “gender equity,” in what way is that within education’s purview?

Why are children being directed to find their life-defining “identity”?

Such a switch surely won’t leave the world unchanged.

And it looks to me like a part of a larger American movement.

I believe we are — in many ways — being made weak.

Self “identity” has never before been the way members of a society were grouped. Men and women ’til now were separated, not according to gender, but sex.

In the past, generally, no one “identified” as a boy. They weren’t “cisgender.” Females didn’t “identify” as girls — not because the concepts of boy and girl didn’t exist, but because the concept of identity didn’t.

People didn’t walk about thinking, “I’m a boy.” Rather, they just walked about.

And every now and then, they were placed into one of two categories because of their chromosomes.

It seems to me we’re being sold on emptiness. We’re being pointed toward ideas lacking in weight.

We’re being ordered to put faith in and focus on things with less substance than before.

In truth, there is no value in “pride” or “empowerment” just because you are you; there is no substance to mere “identity.”

Many who champion such terms appear the first to crumble at any ideas challenging their own.

Meanwhile, we’re being directed to hate our neighbors because of their views. We’re told our actual “community” is comprised of strangers with the same skin color or sexual interests.

But that isn’t community. And that “community” will never have your back. They don’t know you, and you doing well can’t improve their own well-being.

The people who could be a support — those on the same street or in the same town — are, according to messages all around, our enemies due to political differences that never before broke America.

As those in leadership sell us on new methods of finding meaning in our lives, it appears to me we’re crumbling in fundamental ways.

As individuals and as a society, our durability has waned.

Communities once were strong; neighborhoods once were unified. A faith in God bound people to moral uprightness and purpose. That world view was a solid rock upon which to stand.

Everyone has a God. Or many. But our gods these days seem inferior to the ones of old.

As I posed previously:

[T]he world is swallowing itself whole: We’re being devoured by our own narcissism.

The signs are all around.

We live in the age of the selfie stick. Across a global electronic miracle, we post photos of ourselves on pages created by ourselves to showcase…ourselves.

And those in leadership, as best I can tell, are encouraging us to place our faith on sinking sand. In myriad ways.

In the end, will we be a nation that is weak but “identifies” as strong?

I hope not; because on that day, our identity won’t help us.
