On Monday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had a message for NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio: “Do your job.”

I was sort of under the impression that no one was doing their job anymore.

Yet, during Andrew’s daily briefing in Westchester County, he called on Bill to do his.

To be clear, he was talking about enforcing coronavirus restrictions — after all, as observed by The Daily Caller, people have been getting together at bars and restaurants.

And in the streets.

Andrew said not to forget the danger if violations run rampant.

The remark came in response to the mayor’s assertion that he should relax over unmasked patrons.

His reply:

“Do your job, local government. If the local governments don’t enforce compliance, they are not doing anyone any favors.”

Bill didn’t seem too concerned about the virus when he joined a crowd in protest recently.

But maybe he was just helping everyone warm up for Phase 2 — Rochester’s WHAM notes the Big Apple’s still only in the first phase of its 4-level reopening.

Still, didn’t they already reach Phase 700 amid the government-permitted, sardine-packed riots?

Either way, as for Andrew’s “Do your job” jab, it’s not his first time to deliver such a punch.

On June 2nd, amid chaos in the streets, he boxed Bill and law enforcement:

“The NYPD and the mayor did not do their job last night.”

That didn’t appear wholly off-base — despite theft and arson, the city’s leadership looked laid back.

By contrast in May, Bill warned aspiring swimmers: If they try to take a dip in the bay, they’ll be “taken right out of the water.”

It seems we need a clarification on what the “job” of major city leaders is. Is it to keep order? Is it to manage wellness?

On that second point, de Blasio at least used to think so. There are roughly 7,000 inmates at Rikers Island. In the name of public health, he released prisoners due to threat from the coronavirus. That bunch included eight sex offenders.

Oddly, there was no similarly-expressed concern as throngs destroyed parts of New York City.

I’m not a doctor, and I’m no law expert; but I do know that germs don’t care about politics. And it seems politics don’t care about germs — if the elected leaders involved see a chance to elevate themselves.

And some believe both Bill and Andrew have stunk up the joint:

After all the allowed social non-distancing of the last few weeks, I’m not so sure many will take COVID restrictions seriously anymore.

Nonetheless, as for our elected officials “doing their job,” I hope that includes what it was once supposed to: guarding public safety and letting liberty-laden America exist.

That’s a job it seems a whole lot of people haven’t been doing.
