Ahh, Bernie Sanders. He came on strong; people from all over seemed to love his ideas.
But lately, the poor guy’s seen a few setbacks.
He’s been the Job of Democratic politics: First, Hillary shanks him in 2016.
The Vermont socialist got further bladed by Clinton in her recent Hulu series (here).
And now, a dip in the primaries with the establishment against him once again?
Doesn’t matter — you can’t keep a good man down.
Although — perhaps, given toxic masculinity — we wish you could.
Nevertheless, he isn’t giving up. Fight, Bern. Fight.
And fight he shall.
On Wednesday, Sanders announced he’ll continue forward, despite Joe Biden’s widening lead.
It makes sense to me — Joe, in my estimation, is perpetually close to ending his reign due to a gargantuan gaffe or some sort of medically-advised sit-out.
But Bernie has different reasons for sojourning on, as he pointed out at a press conference in his home state’s city of Burlington.
The senator said he’s killin’ it in two major areas:
“[W]e are strongly winning in two enormously important areas which will determine the future of our country. Poll after poll — including exit polls — show that a strong majority of the American people support our progressive agenda.”
Bernie believes “millions” of Dem voters agree with his plans; they’re just concerned that he’s less likely to beat Trump:
“While our campaign has won the ideological debate, we are losing the debate over electability.”
In a debate against The Donald, I personally think Bernie might do better than Joe. Biden seems incapable of firing off for long without screwing up what he’s trying to say. I don’t think that’ll play well against a man with a laserlike focus.
And Biden’s emotional.
Donald Trump takes your emotion, spins it around his back like a Harlem Globetrotter, then fires it back at you like a football to the nose of Marcia Brady.
Back to the conference: Beyond triumphing in the idealogical department, Bern asserted that he’s also king of the generational one:
“It is not just the ideological debate that our progressive movement is winning. We are winning the generational debate. While Joe Biden continues to do very well with older Americans, especially those people over 65, our campaign continues to win the vast majority of the votes of younger people.”
He’s not wrong — young voters, as he observed, are the future.
And the DNC’d better be straightening its game with those youngsters, Jack!
“You cannot simply be satisfied by winning the votes of people who are older.”
The Southern Baptist Church would surely give an Amen to that.
As per The Washington Free Beacon, Bernie also double-dog-dared his major rival:
He reiterated key points from his platform while challenging Biden to speak to the same issues moving forward.
And for good measure, he took time to dump on Trump:
“Tragically, we have a president today who is a pathological liar and who is running a corrupt administration. He clearly does not understand the Constitution of the United States and thinks that he is a president who is above the law.”
Wow.
Kitchen-sink this thing, Bern:
“In my view, he is a racist, a sexist, a homophobe, a xenophobe, and a religious bigot.”
Holy cripes.
“And he must be defeated. And I will do everything in my power to make that happen.”
Call recent voting a bump in the road, but the Bern Train is keepin’ on chuggin’:
“What became even more apparent yesterday is that while we are currently losing the delegate count — approximately 800 delegates for Joe Biden and 660 for us — we are strongly winning in two enormously important areas which will determine the future of our country.”
Bernie believes everyone’s sick of this whole rich-and-poor thing, and he’s here to kick some butt:
“The American people are deeply concerned about the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality in this country, and the American people want the wealthy and large, profitable corporations to start paying their fare share of taxes — overwhelming support for that.”
First, of course, he’ll have to butt-kick Biden.
And he’ll have his chance — Sunday, March 15th in Phoenix. Ahead of more primaries Tuesday (here).
I can’t wait.
