Do you hope Donald Trump, in his kerchief and cap, has settled into impeachment like a long winter’s nap?
Will the inquiry only — like cell phones and Candace Cameron — get better with time?
Are you hoping for a lengthy trial?
According to Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen, Republicans are. Those in the Senate, anyway.
He said as much during an appearance on Fox News program Special Report with Bret Baier.
It’s all supposedly about galvanizing the base and drawing the Democrats’ attention away from that shiny object known as the 2020 presidency.
Here’s Marc:
“If you want a sign of how this is going in the Republicans’ favor, a few weeks ago, the Senate Republicans are talking about how we are going to have a quick trial, might even have a motion to dismiss right away. [The] Washington Post is reporting out that some Senate Republicans are talking about a lengthy impeachment trial beginning in January to scramble the Democratic presidential race.”
It’s not a bad idea — why not let the Democrats do what they themselves are fighting to — pay absolutely no attention to things that are important for their success, and instead expend resources (including time) on a

On Wednesday, the Post offered this:
Some Republican senators and their advisers are privately discussing whether to pressure GOP leaders to stage a lengthy impeachment trial beginning in January to scramble the Democratic presidential race — potentially keeping six contenders in Washington until the eve of the Iowa caucuses or longer.
Marc surmised:
“Nobody would be talking like that if they thought this was bad for them.”
Bret threw in, “That has Mitch McConnell written all over it.”
Then Marc served the very interesting notion of a parallel political power-up:
“I think Republican’s are starting to see that the impeachment is to 2020 what the Kavanaugh hearings were to 2018 for the Senate. This could help them hold the Senate just because it’s gonna energize their base and it could even help them win the White House.”
The man has a point. For all their anti-gun obstinance, since Trump won the White House, the Democratic Party has appeared to insist upon keeping a gun pointed squarely at its foot.
And there’s not a trigger lock in sight.
