In late September, Chicago cops were told how it is on immigration enforcement.

The directive had a distinctive separatist vibe: Don’t cooperate with the Department of Homeland Security where illegal immigration is concerned.

Fox News obtained a memo sent out in late September ordering the men and women in blue to press Pause and wait for a supervisor before any assistance to DHS.

“If the request is to assist with an immigration arrest or detention,” the supervisor will take over and “CPD personnel will leave the scene as directed by the [them].”

Noting to Fox that they’ve traditionally assisted federal agents, one Chicago law enforcement source warned that the new policy puts both police and agents in danger:

“See what happens when that happens and a DHS agent is injured because of a lack of response by CPD. Sickening what’s happening here.”

Another put it like this:

“You’ll not find a single real police officer that would refuse to assist another agency.”

DHS is, of course, none too thrilled, as indicated by a spokesperson:

“The Department of Homeland Security is deeply concerned with the dangerous anti-law enforcement direction given by the leadership of the Chicago Police Department. The men and women of ICE put their lives on the line every day to protect the citizens of this country from dangerous criminals.”

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot had something to say about that at an illegal immigration rally just last week:

“We will never, ever succumb to the racist, xenophobic rhetoric of ICE. We will continue to ban ICE from having access to any CPD databases. We’ll not allow any CPD officer to cooperate with anything related to ICE and its immigration raids.”

For anyone wondering if illegal immigration contributes to crime in Illinois’s most bustling city, you can rest at ease. In early September, Lori made crystal clear who’s to blame for the Democrat-controlled metropolis’s outrageous gun violence: Republicans.

“60% of illegal firearms recovered in Chicago come from outside IL—mostly from states dominated by coward Republicans like [Ted Cruz] who refuse to enact commonsense gun legislation.”

And remember, those guns then walk around the city, just fillin’ people full o’ lead. What’re ya gonna do? Guns have legs, are filled with venomous rage, and they’re especially violent drunks. They’ll hit a liquor store, get a Colt 45 in a paper sack, and tear into some menacin’. That’s why we gotta lock ’em up.

We’re living in strange times, with governments warring against Government.

On one hand, the Constitution lays out a plan not much followed: States are to be largely autonomous. Chicago’s giving that a shot.

But DHS believes that shot might get people shot:

“Failing to support fellow law enforcement officers upon request for assistance not only places our heroic police officers in greater danger but keeps criminals on the streets and makes all of our communities less safe, specifically the great City of Chicago.”
