On Tuesday, Joe Biden made a startling claim: prominent Republican donors want to back his presidential run against Donald J. Trump.
Say what?
During an event at the University of Delaware’s Biden School, the former VP claimed “the people who are usually the biggest donors in the Democratic Party” as well as “some major Republican folks” have offered to foot the bill for a Biden run for Oval Office glory.
In line with expectations, Joe whipped out an indication that he’ll be throwing his hat into the 2020 ring:
“I’m certain about where the family is, but the second piece is that I don’t want this to be a fool’s errand, and I want to make sure that if we do this — and we’re very close to getting to a decision — that I am fully prepared to do it.”
He’s also trying to figure out how funding will work:
“We also are making a decision on whether or not we can fund this campaign on my conditions — because I will not be part of a super PAC, or accept — and to see whether or not it’s realistic.”
And here’s the kicker:
“An awful lot of people have offered to help, and the people who are usually the biggest donors in the Democratic Party and — I might add — some major Republican folks.”
Who are these people? It would take quite the deep-pocketed NeverTrumper to support Joe Biden for president.
Nonetheless, the NeverTrumpers are still among us — somewhere, tonight, howling at the moon. Still, I believe most of them are all bark and no Biden.
