On Wednesday, the Department of Justice charged former U.S. Air Force Officer Monica Witt with sharing governmental secrets with Iran.

According to Reuters, 39-Year-old Witt gave Iranian hackers dossiers on eight U.S. intelligence operatives. Those technicians then attempted to install spyware on the American military agents’ computers.

“[Witt] decided to turn against the United States and shift her loyalty to Iran,” explained FBI Executive Assistant Director for National Security Jay Tabb.

The former servicewoman — who defected to Iran in 2013 — faces one count of conspiracy and two counts of delivering military information to a foreign government.

Witt’s tenure with the Air Force lasted from 1997 to 2008, during which she enjoyed high-level security clearances as a counterintelligence agent in the Middle East.

Apparently, she flipped loyalties sometime before her February 2012 trip to Iran for the New Horizon conference, which showcased anti-U.S. propaganda.

In the indictment against Witt, Assistant Attorney General John Demers condemned her betrayal:

“Monica Witt is charged with revealing to the Iranian regime a highly classified intelligence program and the identity of a U.S. Intelligence officer, all in violation of the law, her solemn oath to protect and defend our country, and the bounds of human decency.”

U.S. Attorney Jessie Liu said the case against Witt is the manifestation of a zero-tolerance policy by the federal government:

“This case reflects our firm resolve to hold accountable any individual who betrays the public trust by compromising our national security. Today’s announcement also highlights our commitment to vigorously pursue those who threaten U.S. security through state-sponsored hacking campaigns.”

At present time, Witt is believed to still be in Iran.
