Mom Charged with Larceny for Taking Away Daughter's iPhone as Punishment

Here’s one for you parents.

A Grandville, Michigan mom appeared in court Tuesday, charged with theft. What did she steal? A cellphone. From her kid.

Previously on the planet, this was known as “discipline.” But in these days of participation trophies, teens being told to revolt against the government, social justice war, and adults kowtowing to the demands of children, punishment and violation of rights are separated by a thin line at best.

However, the culprit here may be the ugliness of divorce.

In April, Jodie May confiscated her 15-year-old daughter’s iPhone 6 after the teen got in trouble at school.

On May 11th — one day before Mother’s Day — she was arrested. Nursing a four-week-old baby at the time, Jodie begged the policeman to allow her to turn herself in two days later. But alas, hardened criminals mustn’t be coddled.

“He had told me that he was going to arrest me, and I asked him if I could turn myself in on that Monday by myself, that I had a new baby. She wasn’t taking the bottle yet.”

She was charged with misdemeanor larceny and larceny by conversion, each with a maximum sentence of 93 days in lock-up. May was released on $200 bond.

The detainment came after the mom’s ex-husband reported her “crime” to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. He claimed he owned the phone and, therefore, she had stolen his property.

In the court proceedings, prior to witnesses being called, prosecutors informed the judge that the phone, in fact, belonged to Jodie’s daughter.

The assistant prosecutor adjusted accordingly:

“The mother defendant being the mother of the minor child, I believe that changes the case significantly. Therefore, we’re requesting that the charges be dismissed.”

May was relieved:

“I can’t believe I had to be put through it, my daughter had to be put through it, my family. I’m very surprised, but I’m very happy with the outcome.”

Perhaps all’s well that ends well, but what if the father had been determined as the phone’s rightful owner? What then? Would Jodie May be sitting in the clink for disciplining her daughter?

The possibility isn’t far away. And with the stranglehold of the Left tightening evermore, such a situation may be only moments from us in these United States.

The times, they are a-changin’. And if the Right doesn’t rise up and fight not only the political, but cultural changes giving power to the state, entitlement to children, and dismissal to parental rights, moms and dads may one day fear disciplining their children — even in non-corporal ways — due to threat of government intervention.

Think that sounds crazy? Take a look at the transgender agenda determining school construction and forcing teacher resignations, and you’ll see a machine that’s only one of many moving against the will of parents, in the name of betterment.
