Not Good: Trump Considering Billionaire Social Justice Warrior for Supreme Court, Sources Say

Spreading fast on social media this Thursday morning is a story originally posted at the Huffington Post, which reports that Donald Trump is considering PayPal founder, gay marriage supporter, and culture war snob Peter Thiel for the Supreme Court. If appointed, Thiel would be the first openly gay Supreme Court Justice, a landmark I personally think Trump would find irresistible.

From the article:

Donald Trump has made it clear he will nominate Peter Thiel to the Supreme Court if he wins the presidency, Thiel has told friends, according to a source close to the PayPal co-founder.

Trump “deeply loves Peter Thiel,” and people in the real estate mogul’s inner circle are talking about Thiel as a Supreme Court nominee, a separate source close to Trump told The Huffington Post. That source, who has not spoken to Trump directly about Thiel being nominated to the Court, cautioned that Trump’s offers often fail to materialize in real life.

Thiel spoke at the Republican Convention this year and took potshots at conservatives who don’t think men should be using women’s restrooms, and generally at the entire idea of the culture wars. As a Supreme Court appointee I can’t imagine trusting him on any social issue or issues of religious freedom. Trump has previously vowed to protect religious freedom.

Thiel, for his part, denies what the two independent sources confirmed to Huffington Post reporters.

“Peter hasn’t had any conversations about a Supreme Court nomination and has no interest in the job,” said Thiel spokesman Jeremiah Hall.

The Trump campaign denies it too.

Trump’s press secretary, Hope Hicks, denied that Thiel had been offered a seat on the Supreme Court or that the campaign was discussing the idea. “There is absolutely no truth to this whatsoever,” she told HuffPost.

Of course, Trump’s denials mean exactly jack and squat, so that really has no bearing here.

What does matter is that Trump is pretty disorganized in his campaign and seems fairly uninterested in how he’s going to run things if he gets elected. I mean, look, it’s unlikely “no plan” Trump is engaging in extensive vetting of any candidates for any post.

But the fact that a source close to Thiel and a separate source close to Trump both confirmed it means it probably has come up, and has probably been seriously talked about. Which shows you exactly how seriously he took that pretend list of potential nominees he threw out to placate conservatives.

The thing to remember is that Peter Thiel looks the part for Trump. He’s everything Trump wants in a man. He’s brash, he attacks media, he’s mega wealthy, he believes in his wealth as a confirmation of his general correctness on all things, and he’s socially liberal.
