BREAKING: Trump Campaign Manager Lewandowski Will NOT Be Prosecuted on Battery Charge

Citing unnamed sources, Politico reported Wednesday evening that Donald Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowski will not be prosecuted for battery, the charge for which he was previously arrested in connection to the Michelle Fields incident.

The decision not to press charges against Corey Lewandowski is scheduled to be announced on Thursday afternoon by Palm Beach County State Attorney David Aronberg.

Fields may still pursue a defamation case against Lewandowski, a source said.

This will, without question, be grossly use by the Trump campaign as some kind of watershed vindication moment. “Look,” they will say, “you guys are always accusing us of doing wrong and yet here is a prosecutor saying we are innocent.” Which is not what he said. But that’s what they will claim. Promise.

A Fields defamation case win would sort that out quickly, but the odds of such a move resolving in the short term are, to say the least, remote.

More from Politico:

Aronberg would not comment, but in a POLITICO interview last week, he pointed out that Jupiter police had a low “probable cause” standard to cite Lewandowski for battery. But the responsibility for moving forward with a full-blown prosecution rested with Aronberg’s office, which had to consider whether a crime occurred and whether they believed a jury of Floridians would prosecute.

“We have a higher standard to go forward with a prosecution,” he said.

Fields would not comment on the record. Lewandowski could not immediately be reached for comment.

Many lawyers said they just didn’t think jurors would think of this case as a battery, even though it met the technical threshold for the crime under Florida law, which essentially defines battery as unwanted touching.

During Trump and company’s “defense” subsequent to the incident, Lewandowski publicly berated Michelle Fields on Twitter, and the campaign’s general treatment of her was widely criticized. Her website, Breitbart, essentially took the Trump campaign’s side against their own reporter, resulting in a walk-out of several of their contributors. All of those facts would come into play in any defamation case.

Whether Trump and his minions claim this as a vindication won’t absolve them of sleazy behavior throughout, including the outright refusal to simply apologize for being dicks; an arrogance they exhibit in all their interactions with all people at all times.

UPDATE: 10:26 p.m. ET – Michelle Fields confirms she will be pursuing defamation case against Lewandowski.
