Remember the days after Christmas? It was only a month ago, and yet another holiday season is upon us. Whether it’s from cable news, talk radio, internet pop-up ads or any of the ways you choose to stay plugged in, you really can’t escape knowing all the gift options for your loved one available this Valentine’s Day.
As well informed as you might be on which companies will separate you from your money thanks to mass media, are you informed enough on how these companies will actually use your money and do they reflect your values? Below are some of the market segments that are on the top of our spending lists as we buy our special someone that special Valentines gift:
CARDS: Buying a card may be the least you can do, but a well thought out note could earn enough points to keep you out of the doghouse if you’re otherwise unprepared for the day. If this is your back-up plan, avoid buying a card from Hallmark who has supported Susan G. Komen, an organization that funds Planned Parenthood and actively advertises its Human Rights Campaign score of 90. Instead, try American Greetings for a more neutral alternative.
FLOWERS: While not an overtly politically active company, 1-800-Flowers was a Gold Patron of the GLAAD Media Awards. GLAAD’s activity on the marriage debate, along with other left-wing activity is well documented and conservatives can do better. The alternative, ProFlowers, is a politically neutral company. So is Edible Arrangements where your gift is part decoration, part something sweet that will cover two of your bases with one purchase.
CANDY: Russell Stover and Godiva will taste even better with the peace of mind that comes from doing business with companies that are neutral across the board. Candy giants Nestle and Hershey have both supported groups that fund Planned Parenthood like Susan G. Komen and the United Way. Mars was even listed recently as a corporate sponsor of “Hillary’s Think Tank”, the Center for American Progress.
JEWELRY: If this is the year that you plan to splurge, or maybe you’re the one dropping a few hints, Zales and Kay Jewelers are both neutral on the issues. While Zales has supported Susan G. Komen in the past, the company also supports The Salvation Army, a Pro-Life organization.
While the debate rages on about Valentine’s Day being a holiday that was created by retailers, the research shown above will keep those retailers honest in their standings on the issues. So while finding the right gift for your special person is never easy, you can have a shortened list by knowing where your money is going after your purchases. If the one you’re thinking of this time of year shares your values, and we hope he or she does, then wouldn’t they appreciate you thinking of what causes the businesses you patronize support? After all, it’s the thought that counts…
