Follow the Money: KIND Healthy Snacks

Next time you reach for a healthy snack at your local grocery or convenience store, you might want to first ask yourself if they have been KIND to Israel.

The snack company KIND, which has reported revenue of over $125 million, and is available in such outlets as Starbucks and Walmart, explains that “our focus is on making the world a little kinder, one snack and one kind act at a time.” On the surface, it seems like a very simple and noble goal, and one that consumers should be happy to support. However, recent media reports show that KIND’s CEO, Daniel Lubetzky, has not been so kind when it comes to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his upcoming election.

Lubetzky is founder of Peaceworks’ OneVoice movement. The Washington Free Beacon last week reported that that  “U.S.-based [and Lubetzky founded] activist group OneVoice International has partnered with V15, an ‘independent grassroots movement’ in Israel that is actively opposing Netanyahu’s party in the upcoming elections.” It further noted that “While V15 has not endorsed any particular candidates, it is working to oppose Netanyahu in the March elections.”

One need not rely solely on news reports as evidence of the KIND CEO’s opposition to the Israeli Prime Minister. Days after The Washington Free Beacon report, Lubetzky took to social media to tweet the following anti-Netanyahu message: “Netanyahu turning long-term bipartisan relation [between] Israel and the US into divisive partisan issue to get elected-Ugh.”

It is worth noting that Lubetzky’s political actions aren’t merely limited to Israel. In fact, he has been very active in U.S. politics. Not surprisingly, that activity has been overwhelmingly in support of Democrats. The anti-Netanyahu CEO contributed to the 2008 Presidential campaigns of both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, along with a donation to the Democratic National Committee.  In 2012 he continued his support of the President with contributions to Obama for America, the Obama Victory Fund, and another healthy sum of cash to the DNC.

As a result of the KIND CEO’s actions, we at 2nd Vote, the online resource dedicated to informing consumers about the various issues/causes companies support, sent Lubetzky the following questions to help better determine his motivations and how he plans to use his company’s revenue in the future:

1) Since it is apparent you do not support Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s re-election, can you state which candidate/candidates & cause/causes you do support and your reasoning behind that support?

2) Do you plan on partnering with any other organizations that support or oppose certain causes or political leaders, including those here in the United States? If so, which ones?

3) Considering your past financial support of liberal causes and candidates, can you please let our organization and your customers know if you plan to further support similar causes or candidates during the 2016 cycle? If so, which ones?

2nd Vote looks forward to hearing back from the KIND CEO to help us better understand his current and future political actions. In the meantime, next time you crave a healthy snack, we suggest you select something un-KIND.
