Last night, news broke of a sudden discovery that Stephen Bannon, Trump’s campaign CEO and the man who has done everything he possibly can to ruin Andrew Brietbart’s name, was accused of domestic violence in the mid-90s by his then-wife. My colleague Susan Wright covers the allegations here, but I would like to register a complaint with the media that was so eager to jump on this story.
Let’s look at the facts for a moment:
- Bannon currently works for Donald Trump
- Bannon works on the conservative side of the political aisle
- These allegations were made during divorce proceedings
- They were eventually dropped
And, yet, the media pounced on the story as soon as it broke. Bannon is portrayed as a despicable man, even among many on the Right, so it’s a confirmation of character. And, he’s working for a presidential candidate. Sorry, make that a Republican presidential candidate.
The media would not have touched this story if the allegations had turned up regarding someone from the Clinton camp. We know this because they have repeatedly refused to touch any of the numerous non-Lewinsky allegations made against Bill Clinton. Bannon is not protected by any such liberal media wagon-circling because he is not One of Them.
Instead, they cheer the idea that Freedom of Information Requests got this information and that their fellow reporters were brave enough to seek it, when something far more obvious is going on here – they were just acting on opposition research that was handed to them. Or do you mean to tell me that it’s merely coincidence that on the day Hillary talks specifically about Bannon in a speech the media just happens to have this story ready to go?
I mean, it’s not like Hillary’s opposition research team hasn’t done that before. Remember the Rubios’ speeding tickets?
It’s how a liberal media operates. The facts seem more likely to indicate that the wife made the allegations in an attempt to keep Bannon from gaining any sort of custody of their children. Allegations like this during divorce proceedings aren’t a new thing that happens. You know what is a new thing that’s happening? The continued release of more and more e-mails from Hillary Clinton’s unsecure e-mail server. The one she wasn’t supposed to have. The one that was a clear violation of both policy and law.
But the media is barely talking about those. Judicial Watch is a Right-leaning group. So it’s just an agenda. It’s not an agenda that supports the Democratic Party’s candidate, so it’s just biased and slanted and not worth touching much.
They’ve already made their obligatory tough-on-Hillary news of the month with the State Department’s pay-for-play story the AP broke this week. They consider that job finished. Time to go back to Donald Trump, the Media Money Maker.
I’m not saying don’t cover the Bannon story. But I am saying you don’t praise yourselves on something you are so very clearly doing for one person and not the other.
