It’s no surprise when celebrities, even celebrity athletes support Democrats. It is a common occurrence so when I heard LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers would endorse Hillary Clinton, I shrugged. When I read the endorsement however, I was puzzled as to the reason for his endorsement.

The entire piece can be found here but this is what stuck out:

Like my foundation, Hillary has always been a champion for children and their futures. For over 40 years, she’s been working to improve public schools, expand access to health care, support children’s hospitals, and so much more.

She wants to make sure kids have access to a good education, no matter what zip code they live in. She’ll rebuild schools that are falling apart and put more money into computer science. She’ll make sure teachers are paid what they deserve so they can give everything to their students.

She also has plans to make college a reality for more people in America, especially for those who can’t afford it. My kids in Akron are proof of the hope and motivation that come from knowing college can be in their future, no matter what obstacles they might be facing.

Allow me to break this down:

• For over 40 years, she’s been working to improve public schools

Based on how public schools are performing she has been a miserable failure in her efforts. If Lebron James were to look at just the last 25 years, he’d see that there hasn’t been any notable improvement in public school performance. Ben Scafidi of Kennesaw State University, studied the increase in spending on education from 1992 to 2012. This is what he found:

As you can see, despite a student increase of 19%, money spent on administrators and other staff increased 45%. Teachers? Only 28%. This resulted in almost no increase in student performance:

All those administrators really helped, right? Is that Hillary’s legacy?

The following is just astounding:

• She wants to make sure kids have access to a good education, no matter what zip code they live in.

If she truly believes this, she would drop her teachers union backed opposition to school choice that includes both charter schools and opportunity scholarships for private and parochial schools. Multiple studies have shown both charter and private school students outperform their public school counterparts. Hillary Clinton cannot be held up as a champion of children if she remains wedded to the idea public school students and their parents have no other choice outside of the school they are required to attend — thanks to their zip code.

If LeBron James wants to endorse Hillary Clinton, fine. But he’d do better than highlight her awful track record on education.
