Minnesota seems to be ground zero for perps trying, and all too often succeeding, in stealing the taxpayers' money. But we're making headway. We can file this one under "a good start." In Minnesota, where fraud cases are flying like a flock of summer starlings, four men have now admitted guilt in a case involving $2.2 million fraudulently taken from Minnesota's Housing Stabilization Services program.
Chalk up one for the good guys.
In one of dozens of cases, four men pleaded guilty to defrauding Minnesota's Housing Stabilization Services program of about $2.2 million.
“These defendants corruptly exploited vulnerable people and a vulnerable program to enrich themselves,” said Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald of the Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division. “Taxpayer dollars designed to provide shelter and support for the homeless and needy instead went to the pockets of these men. They have now admitted their fraudulent conduct and will face justice for their crimes.”
That's what makes these fraudsters particularly egregious. We can argue the benefits, the need for, and the constitutionality of these programs all day long, but as long as they exist, the money allocated to them is supposed to go to people, Americans, in particular need, not to fraudsters who are saving up for a new Ferrari.
Now, that program is no more:
The HSS program was shut down after investigations revealed systemic fraud that allegedly siphoned millions of dollars from the Medicaid-funded program.
“Medicaid fraud is a serious offense with real consequences,” said U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota Daniel N. Rosen. “These defendants stole funds intended to support vulnerable Minnesotans who rely on housing and recovery services. Their guilty pleas underscore my office’s commitment to holding accountable those who exploit public programs.”
This case, with four perps admitting their guilt, is the tip of the iceberg, but at least, now, we know where the iceberg is, and how much of it remains to be broken up and melted down. That's not nothing.
Medicare and Medicaid fraud is a serious problem. Reports put the amount of combined Medicare and Medicaid fraud at between $60 and 100 billion dollars, possibly more. All of this, every dollar, is money stolen from the taxpayers - from Americans who work, and save, and watch their nickels and dimes, as fraudsters rip off the federal government for billions. It's intolerable, especially in a nation as laden with debt as the United States.

At least now four fraudsters have been caught, and they have admitted to their depredations; what's not clear is how much, if any, of the ill-gotten funds will be recovered.
Oh, and the identities of the perps?
In the case of the four men that pled guilty, they submitted thousands of claims to Medicaid for reimbursement. In total, Moktar Hassan Aden, Mustafa Dayib Ali, Khalid Ahmed Dayib, and Abdifitah Mohamud Mohamed signed up about 350 people for services that were never provided.
Color me surprised. Shocked, even. This is what we should expect, with mass immigration of people from low-trust, or even zero-trust, nations.
