Sometimes it's just roundly satisfying to see someone get what's coming to them. Karma, after all, is that endless knot referred to (mostly) in Indian religion and spirituality, in which one's actions affect one's future successes and failures, or, as Shakespeare worded it, in this life, each man gets what he deserves.
Which brings us to Kirk Bangstad, a Wisconsin brewer who, on the occasion of the attempt on President Trump's life at the White House Correspondents' dinner in April, promised patrons free beer on the event of President Trump's death. Loathsome and hateful, right? Well, what goes around comes around; now Bangstad is shut down. The state yanked his license.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Monday that liberal activist and brewery owner Kirk Bangstad is "vowing to fight ‘tooth and nail’ after receiving a letter from the state's Department of Revenue revoking Minocqua Brewing Co.'s permit to operate in Wisconsin, according to a July 26 newsletter sent to his supporters."
"As you can imagine, I’m not taking this lying down," Bangstad wrote in a Substack post on Sunday. "We’re going to fight the state of Wisconsin tooth and nail, and once again, they’ll have to pry me out of my taprooms before I stop selling beer to thirsty progressives who come to visit us."
Well, he had better be stopped now, or he may well find himself looking at iron bars from inside. And here's the thing: He didn't lose his license for political reasons. He didn't lose his license for wishing bodily harm to the President of the United States. He didn't lose it at the request of anyone in the Trump administration. He lost it for violating the rules on transporting beer across state lines.
The Sentinel reported that state regulators pursued revoking Bangstad's alcohol license after authorities seized canned beer from his company in June, alleging it had been transported from Illinois without the required permits and taxes. The newspaper also reported that Bangstad criticized the proposed action as an excessive response, arguing the alleged tax violations did not warrant shutting down his business.
Whoops. And, let me add, it couldn't happen to a nicer and more deserving jerk.

Now, while we may find this personally satisfying, and I do, we should note that there's no indication this was done for political reasons. Oh, Kirk Bangstad may have drawn some unwelcome attention onto himself for being an orifice, but it looks as though his license was revoked for moving adult beverages across state lines without the proper paperwork and taxes. Many of us may think that this is a silly and intrusive rule, but the rule it is, and Kirk Bangstad stands accused of breaking it. Now the state of Wisconsin is breaking him.
Now, Kirk Bangstad has the same First Amendment rights as the rest of us, although some of his statements may cross over into incitement. But I hold with the late, great Rush Limbaugh, who was fond of pointing out that the best way you can harm a leftist is to simply let them speak. They hurt themselves more than anyone else could possibly hurt them. But when they get hit with economic repercussions, whether they be directly related or not, that's just the icing on the cake.
I'll be chuckling over this for the rest of the day.
